This company has been in serious trouble for years.

Many contributing factors to their decline:

1. Direct sales approach outdated. Who wants to attend a high pressure "party" centered on food containers? They changed recently, but missed an entire generation of potential customers.

2. Competition caught up. No longer has first-mover advantage

3. Price.

4. Planned obsolescence - many products in their market share are not intended to last decades.

5. Branding. What compelling reason is there to buy their products in 2024? In 1970, sure but nowadays, what distinguishes them from other brands?

Sad that another iconic American company is failing and moving all manufacturing to non-US facilities. This is about profit generation and expanding margins, not lowering cost. IOW, greed from decades of taking $ out of the organization and not reinvesting in the people, the product, and the business strategy.

The 148 workers in Hemmingway are probably thinking about the current CEO's salary of $1M base with a $312K bonus, and potential $1.25M target bonus.

Yep. You can buy plastic food containers at the dollar store. Made in China, no doubt, but work just as well.

And when they wear out, you chuck them in the trash and buy new ones, for a dollar.
