Ukraine’s draft woes leave the West facing pressure to make up for the troop shortfall
The Conversation via Yahoo ^ | June 14th, 2024 | Nicolai N. Petro, University of Rhode Island

Ukraine’s current military recruitment campaign is not going according to plan.

Announced on April 16, 2024, the drive was aimed at enlisting hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainian men to help push back against a Russian invasion that has gained momentum in recent months.

But the effort has been met with public skepticism, draft dodging and opposition to unpopular, heavy-handed attempts to root out those not heeding the call to sign up. It has left Ukraine struggling to fill the positions officials say are needed to beat back the invading army.

Rather than solving Ukraine’s problems, the draft effort is multiplying them. And that puts pressure on the West’s current strategy to support Ukraine primarily through military aid. Moreover, I believe it risks the prospect of troops from NATO countries eventually being pulled into direct military confrontation with Russia.

The author's point is that Ukraine does not, and will not have the manpower to continue the war.

So the choices are: 1. NATO/US troops on the ground in direct conflict with Russia...or... 2. Make a deal that preserves the Ukrainian state.

Binary.

They want as many of us dead as possible.

Wars are a really efficient way to do that.

No.

Ukraine’s defense is up to Ukrainians.

I’ll join street protests against sending American troops.

Agree - the idea of actually ‘winning’ has very quietly slipped away from the discussion. Now I suspect that the Neocons are running Focus Groups to try to figure out if ending the war if it means Trump wins in November is preferable to World War 3, at least to US voters.

I think a third option is to send our Zeepers. Most have supported this war since The Zelensky and NATO started it.

I respect your position. Since the people wo run Biden seem hell bent on forever financing this, do you think we should allow the Ukes to inevitablt fail here, wasting all of the money spent on them? Or find a way to add boots on the ground to the Ukes? Or, thirdly, add some weapon or tactic to the mix that changes the whole dynamic towards favoring the Ukes? I’m not sure what that would be or if it exists. It would also push us very close to thermonuclear war with Russia as well. Thoughts?

Agreed.

As to FR and comments on the Ukraine-Russia over time, one finds something....

Fascinating to observe that a thread begun by you, Mariner, "Posted on 2/28/2022," continues to be active as of today with more than six thousand comments.

It comes down to the binary -- "1. NATO/US troops on the ground in direct conflict with Russia...or... 2. Make a deal that preserves the Ukrainian state."

We could send Ukraine about 2500 illegal aliens per day. Ukraine could offer them citizenship for two years of military service.

The ukies have lost.

I support them, but they did not sufficiently fund their own defense in times of peace. So, they will lose their country.

Russia is on a roll. They have a fresh 5,000,000 artillery rounds from the NORKS. There is not enough 155mm left in the world, or able to be produced to sufficiently supply the ukies. Russia can throw another 1,000,000 men into the meat grinder. Ukies are fielding the last of their 50 year olds.

This is going to be a Russia win. The best the ukies can hope for is a rump statelet under permanent threat of Russian takeover. If I were Putin, at this point I wouldn’t even give them that.

I hate this outcome. But that’s what I see. It’s strategically over, except a few hundred thousand more will die on the way to the inevitable Russian victory.

Which sucks.

If I were Putin, I wouldn’t make a deal. A few hundred thousand more dead and he wins it all. Why not?

Except the zeepers. They’ll be all for it.

As long as they don’t personally have to sacrifice anything.

What’s another Vietnam w nukes? Ukraine is a slaughter house. Vietnam will be nothing in comparison. The lethality of todays weapons is truly frightening as Russia has found out.

I offer a third choice, we can have 25 thousand American troops on the ground in less than 10 days. They will consist of semi-volunteers from BLM, Antifa and our most deadly Rainbow Division of dancing queens. It will be a mandatory 10 year deployment in keeping with Biden's new 10 year war support commitment.

Each "volunteer" will be required to bring their own environmentally friendly electric Moped (or equivalent form of transportation). Umbrellas, facemasks and vaccinations will be furnished by the federal government.

Faced with this new threat the Russians will have no choice but flee in abject terror.

Ukrainian families are sure doing a good job of hiding their young (and not so young) men. I don’t blame them.
