The owners of 64 New York City office buildings are eyeing a drastic transformation: turning their commercial properties into housing, according to fresh data from the Department of City Planning.
In an interview with Gothamist, City Planning Director Dan Garodnick revealed that these owners or their reps have reached out to the city’s Office Conversion Accelerator Program to do so.
This initiative aims to simplify the labyrinth of rules and building codes, assisting owners in repurposing their spaces. It’s a key part of Mayor Eric Adams’ bold plan to create 20,000 new apartments over the next decade, easing the Big Apple’s housing shortage.

Cartel members need a home!
The conversion plan promises thousands of new apartments, yet affordability remains a concern.
for “Illegals” you see. Americans not included.
Oh, wow ... who did not see this coming??
I, and, others have been saying this would be happening, for months.
Commercial leases, in NYC, are at rock bottom.
The cost will be insane, to convert, due to plumbing, at the very least, not to mention a/c loads/design.
They’ll house illegals, most likely.
It does sound like a terrible idea. The lay-out of a building built for offices is so much different than that of one for residential. Electrical, water, HVAC, etc. are all totally different for the two. Imagine the difference in sewage piping? The costs to make the change will probably be more than that of destroying the original building and starting over.
Next question. Where are all these new residents going to work? Or, are these just going to be for non-working “new residents” who are on the tax-payer’s dole?
They’ll probably be at least as nice as the projects.
Revised codes to allow communal bathrooms in 3...2...1....
YOU ARE 100% CORRECT
Why would anyone want to be a landlord in NYC or NYS or any leftist run state or city?
Turning them into shelters with communal bathrooms sounds like the best use of the buildings. Apartments need multiple rooms, doors, kitchens and bathrooms, and the cost would be prohibitive IMO. Maybe Trump could find a way, lol.
This type of conversion makes more sense in New York City than almost anywhere else — because NYC is filled with misfits who are willing to pay a lot of money to live in the crappiest living accommodations you can imagine.
And no Natural Gas, right.
It sounds like a good idea to me. It may be the only intelligent thing the Rats are doing in NYC.
One problem: the office buildings provided a reason to live in NYC. No office building means no jobs means less demanding for extra housing.

Some “apartments” in Tokyo or Hong Kong or little more than a bed.
They have the night life and work “remotely”. Remotely may just be a couple of blocks away.
Does no-one remember Cabrini Green?
Exactly right. The rest of is will be living out in the hinderlands because cities and suburbs will ne given to illegals.
