Former President Donald Trump this week named several possible picks for his running mate in the 2024 presidential election, which he said he would reveal "sometime during the [GOP] convention" in July.

The former president also declined to answer directly when asked about his top three contenders to serve as his running mate, but he did specifically mention Sens. JD Vance, R-Ohio, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., as well as Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson as possible choices.

The convention begins July 15.

If that happened , and then no candidate for vice president got 270 electoral votes , then the US Senate would pick the vice president.

If the 30 electors voted for a Democrat vice president, conceivably you could have a Democrat vice president along with the Republican president in such a scenario.

In the original text of the Constitution, the presidential candidate with the second-most votes would become Vice President, so in practice the two would virtually always be of separate parties.

It only took four election cycles to determine that this system was untenable (imagine if Donald Trump was Joe Biden’s VP) so in 1804 the 12th Amendment was ratified, which changed it so that the president and VP are elected on separate ballots. However in the mid-19th century it became the norm for a presidential and vice presidential candidate to run together as “running mates” so in practice they would always both receive the same number of votes. Additionally, although the electoral college technically selects them separately, on the actual state ballots voters only cast one vote for a presidential-VP pair (I can’t determine if there are any states that don’t do it this way).

So strictly speaking it is possible for the president and VP to be of different parties, but only if the president picks someone of the other party to be their running mate. This has happened; Republican Abraham Lincoln picked Democrat Andrew Johnson as his running mate in a bid to foster national unity, although the fact that Johnson became president after Lincoln was murdered pretty much put an end to the practice, and no successful presidential candidate has chosen a running mate of the opposite party since. Republican John McCain reportedly considered Democrat Joe Lieberman to be his running mate in 2008, but he ultimately chose Sarah Palin and the rest is history.

If no one has a majority of electoral votes for Vice President, the Senate chooses the Vice President from among the two with the most votes, according to the 12th amendment.

So far that has only happened once, when Richard Mentor Johnson was chosen in 1837. He served as Vice President under Martin van Buren.

There's not a lot of positive news from that market analysis.

1. Rubio is a non-starter. He's from Florida too, and we need the Senate seat (even if Rubio's seat is safe, why force another unnecessary special election).

2. Haley won't be in the inner circle. There may be a place for her in Trump's government, but it won't be in a trusted position. She's too liked by the Deep State to let her be too close to the action.

3. Ramaswamy has a place in the administration, but not VP. NBC issues; too many other qualified people with two citizen parents to risk going there. Give him something like Commerce.

4. Carson is well-liked but too passive a personality. Not VP material. I'd trust him with my baby's brain surgery, but not against Schumer and Pelosi. You don't bring a scalpel to a knife fight. Put him back in HHS or Surgeon General.

5. Scott. See Carson. He's better suited to the Senate.

6. Vance, Stefanik, Huckabee -- not ripe yet.

My opinion? I've suggested Abbott in Texas for immigration and states rights, or Glenn Youngkin in Virginia for education and parents rights. If Trump must choose a woman, then perhaps Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee (risking the Senate seat); she's a vocal fighter, too.

I could see him choosing Rubio to strengthen his Latino support. It would gain him an enormous amount of crossover votes, I think.

Plus, Florida is a less difficult state (then many other) to get a republican replacement in the next election.

Rubio has never been my choice, but I could see this happening.

He is simply turning the tables on them and going out to speak in an area they would never have expected.

I won't consider Zelden until he decides if he's going to challenge Kirsten Gillibrand for the Senate in 2024. I'm sure the filing deadline is approaching, so Zelden better decide soon.

I'd rather see him take on Gillibrand in New York than ride Trump's coattails for VP.
