Nolte: CBS Tries to Rehabilitate Disgraced Dan Rather
Breitbart ^ | 04/29/2024 | JOHN NOLTE

Posted on 04/29/2024 1:08:49 PM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

Disgraced former anchorman Dan Rather is 92 years old, and CBS, the network that fired him for trying to rig the 2004 presidential election, has joined the shameless rehab campaign.

During the waning weeks of the 2004 presidential election, Dan Rather was determined to ensure incumbent Republican president George W. Bush did not win reelection. And so, on 60 Minutes II, he ran a story that claimed Bush went AWOL during his time in the Texas Air National Guard. The story was true, and Rather had the documents to prove it. The story was also phony and timed to devastate the wartime president. Bush Jr. was exposed as a liar and shirker, in contrast with his Democrat opponent, John Kerry, who served a few months in Vietnam.

Dan Rather committed outright fraud as part of an illegal political contribution-in-kind. He and the CBS producers should have been sitting in a prison cell for that collection of crimes and not released until the G.W. Bush's four year term was up and after they paid back every penny of such illegal political contributions-in-kind at triple damages.

That was the narrative they were reporting.

Yep.....the type was from a particular model Type-Ball off an IBM Selectric typewriter that wasn’t in production at the time of when the letter was written or something like that.

That was back when I subscribed to National Review (hope people here do not immediately hold that against me). When NR discussed that story, they mentioned that one of the main figures involved in the discovery and pursuance of the “fake but accurate” story was a veteran who worked on dealing with the media’s false portrayals of the Vietnam war, particularly with veterans.

What apparently started this man’s crusade was his local news media outlet in Texas in about 1975 accused a Vietnam veteran of being the perpetrator of an armed holdup. This person discovered that the perp only attended boot camp and left the armed forces shortly thereafter and never, ever saw combat anywhere, especially Vietnam.

It was in a proportional font, and supposed to be from 1967 or something. There were a few (very expensive) typesetting machines available at that time that could do that, but they wouldn't have been used to type up orders and reports in an Air Force reserve office.

Either the documents were very poorly executed fakes, or they were relating the truth, but weren't the originals, but a word-processed retype of the originals.

It was an MS Word document, repeatedly copied to make it look old. Freeper Buckhead was the first to notice the proportional spacing, justification and font didn't match period typewriters, and reproduced the EXACT document in short order using MS Word. Following Buckhead's lead, others were easily able to recreate Dan Rather's Rather obvious forgery.

That is why they should make him their lead anchor. Old, stale and fake, like CBS.

To: Alas Babylon!

I remember how Rather dealt with the allegation in 1992 that Bill Clinton had had an affair with Jennifer Flowers. He completely refused to say anything about the story for months. When he finally reported it, all he said was that Flowers had been paid $150,000 for her story. Years later, Clinton finally admitted to having had the affair when he testified in the Paula Jones lawsuit.

What did Dano and Mary Mapes in was that they were too lazy to find an old manual typewriter.

The proportional spacing of WORD is what alerted Freeper and lawyer Buckhead.

When the Soviet Union was in the throes of collapse, Rather consistently referred to the hardliner holdouts as “conservative.”

Accurate but misleading to his American audience.
