A unique look at the presidency and life of George H.W. Bush from someone who knew him best

HOUSTON — Few people outside of the family knew President George H.W. Bush as well as Jean Becker, his longtime chief of staff. She is sharing stories from her new book, "Character Matters," calling it a roadmap to civility in our polarizing political climate.

Becker is a journalist who became deputy press secretary for Barbara Bush in the White House, then was asked by the president to become his chief of staff once he left office

."I told him I didn't know how to be a chief of staff," Becker said. "I didn't know how to be a boss, do a budget. He said, 'Don't worry about it. We’ll make it up as we go.' So I said, 'OK, I'll stay.' We never talked about it again."

Becker stayed until he died. It was an extraordinary 25 years for this Missouri farm girl who grew up in a town of 300.

The entire Bush family are/were grifters. W with the Texas stadium scam, Neil with Silverado (I almost got into a fist fight with him once), HW and Babs were involved in all sorts of pump and dump stock scams and shaking down Houston businesses and even the school district.

None of them ever worked a day in their lives and the PR flak BS about how they would send nice notes to people about all sorts of stuff was totally contrived. In all of them Barbara Bush was the absolute worst. She was all about the money and in private was brutal in the way she traded influence for money. She was not a nice old grey-haired lady.

Looking back 30+ years, the globalism Bush helped to usher in created an environment (low, low labor costs and no environmental hurdles) for American businesses to move to China, helping make China the economic powerhouse it is today.

What other choices were available?

Remember, the deep state was around back then. They stymied Reagan’s effort against Ford.

To this day, I don’t know what he stood for. I think nothing.

She is sharing stories from her new book, "Character Matters,"

"Read my lips... No new taxes!"

Breaking that pledge cost that moron the election. Character didn't matter because he didn't have any.

Couldn't call Clinton a liar because of his breaking that pledge. Lost the election when he agreed to a tax increase, and the Democrats never intended to keep their side of the bargain.

They only promised it to get that stupid jackass to break that promise. It was the only thing they wanted, and he gave it to them.

....I remember reading that he got a $2BB Govt Medicare contract as a payoff... I don’t think he was in it for the people like Trump is... And Bush was forced on Reagan as VP by threats from CIA & Rockefeller RINOs who then plotted to take him out via Hinkley.... ymmv

Clinton benefited from a Republican candidate who oozed bad trade deals, illegal wars and globalism. I suggest you guys put up better candidates. More Trump than DeSantis, if you get my drift.

Clinton benefited from a Republican candidate who oozed bad trade deals, illegal wars and globalism.

Then did all of the very same things.

Clinton benefited from many FReepers who should have known better.

Consider this: If Trump were to pick DeSantis as his veep and if the Angry Trumpers stay home as they said they will - We have eight more years of Biden.

If Trump were to pick DeSantis as his veep

This is one of the more absurd hypotheticals I've seen. One disloyal v/p in his lifetime is enough.

Hypothetical?

I suppose Trump and DeSantis just had a private meeting to discuss the weather, Hmm?

You AT’s need to face reality.

” Few people have ever been more vindicated by the passage of time than H. Ross Perot with his “giant sucking sound” of jobs leaving the United States. “

Yup.

You left out the $210T+ of the ‘unfunded liabilities’ ala illegal Ponzi schemes of SS/MediXYZ (that many HERE support).
>>
How would you rectify this?
>

Well, 1st, I don’t vote for the lesser of 2 evils expecting non-evil

Then I debate when/where I can to change the voting habits of family/friends/others & supply/prep accordingly. Might not be in MY lifetime, but what I have can be easily passed on to me/mine+

Lastly, I’d let it burn. In fact, I aim shortly to hop on the bandwagon to HELP it crash faster.

“Excepting that Bush Jr. came along & many of FR ran to get their (R)N(C) knee-pads...until the warnings became reality.”

That’s a fact. I’d bet a bundle that Bush loyalists were calling the shots here.

Freepers who pushed back against Dubya’s No Borders policy, including amnesty, were zotted by the hundred. Bush flunkies smeared anyone who objected as nativists, xenophobes and racists. Bush and the GOPe left behind an army of illegal aliens for Obama to exploit.
