NEW YORK — Dan Rather returned to the CBS News airwaves for the first time since his bitter exit 18 years ago, appearing in a reflective interview on “CBS Sunday Morning” days before the debut of a Netflix documentary on the 92-year-old newsman’s life.
After 44 years at the network, 24 as anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” Rather left under a cloud following a botched investigation into then-President George W. Bush’s military record. Rather signed off as anchor for the last time on March 9, 2005, and exited the network when his contract ended 15 months later.

“Botched investigation”
Mistakes were made! Coulda happened to anybody! Like a “Robbery Gone Bad”.
Note well, the RatherGate documents were purposeful FORGERIES. “Botched” implies a certain ineptness, or innocent mistake.
Botched??! Botched! Fabricated is more like it.
Some will still say he was fair. Nope, he was just dignified in his unfairness. Story selection and story supression in particular. And as for Krankheit, we used to call him “Disease”.
Its been a long time, but I seem to remember Dan Rather trying to blame the entire thing on Mapes. Was that how it happened?
Here's the supposed real memo Rather/CBS presented, overlayed with a document created with Word:
I always wondered if “SUBJECT: CYA” is the same as titling a document “SECRET TREASURE MAP.”
Is your family Krautish?
Old, white and woke is a winner.
The dims and their media are having to reach back in to the past to get their message across. Like back to the 70’s.
Lest we forget the unimpeachable “Lucy Ramirez” ( who never existed ) and Bill Burkett burning the original documents.
13 posts to get there!
I remember reading the post that day and thinking this is definitely something that has revealed a fraud.
Besides being a forgery, wasn’t the content also false?
Once he got caught he even said HE should investigate it.
Right!? LOL
They were amazingly stupid in creating their ginned up document.
I read Buckhead’s original post here questioning the document within 15 minutes of his making it. Knew immediately that he was onto something, as I had gone through the gamut of all the printing and word processing technologies involved, from typewriters, to personal computers with dot matrix printers, daisy wheel printers, and laser printers, and software from WordStar to WordPerfect to Word. We used them all to create large building project document specifications for contracts and construction. I’m talking routinely kicking out 3/4” to 1-1/4” thick document sets. I just flat know what was involved in the tech of that era.
No way a military unit at that level would have had anything but typewriters and carbon paper in the 1973 time frame. To get the kerned, microspaced (i.e. non-fixed pitch letter spacing) that was in the fake document you needed technology that was at least 12+ years away for common use. And really more like 20.
Their fake documents were completely anachronistic. And even when this was presented to CBS, obvious as could be, it took them three weeks to finally own up to it all.
Returned as what? A mummy?
What was considered outrageous in 2004 is now routine practice for the fake news mafia. The antics of Dan Rather have become normalized.
Good times! :D
Who’s Don Rotten? Any relation to Johnny?
He’s a lying sack of seeds.
