Pro-life conservatives are 'disappointed' in Trump's new abortion policy, but stick by him: 'only one option'
Fox News ^

Conservative groups backing former president Donald Trump in his re-election bid say they are "deeply disappointed" with his official position on abortion unveiled Monday, but it won't deter their support in November.

The former president and presumptive GOP nominee in a video posted on Truth Social Monday morning said he cemented his position on the controversial issue, saying that abortion access should be a states’ issue and didn’t endorse a national, federal limitation – like a 15-week ban.

Pro-life interest groups who have endorsed Trump expressed disappointment at his announcement, but it appears unlikely to sway their support in consideration of Trump’s overall stance compared to Biden’s extreme abortion policy.

"The reality of a stark choice between President Biden who supports abortion: any number, any reason, up until birth, all paid for by the taxpayer and President Trump: who gave us three Constitutionalist justices, 220 lower court judges, appointees who support life and the overturn of Roe v. Wade has my endorsement and support in November for President," said Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America (CWA), who said she "favors federal limits on abortion."

“I voted for RR-twice-and glad of it. This is NOT RR’s America any more, like it or not-Marxist liberals have taken the democrat party, and we need to keep pushing our constitutional rights, non-stop so they are not lost...”

I have said many times, including in the OP, that Trump is far more conservative than Biden. But it’s crystal clear by now that Trump is not a movement conservative. His massive spending, sucking up to the lavender mafia, and failure to advocate for banning abortions have made that clear.

In the primaries, I was opposed to DeSantis, but on the life issue he is unquestionably stronger.

Donald Trump is the only U.S. President to give a speech IN PERSON at the March for Life in Washington.

Reagan gave a speech from the White House that was broadcast there on one of my trips to the March. He was gently scolded by one of the prominent leaders there (it may have been Judie Brown of the American Life League) for his failure to adopt one particular pro-life measure or another (I forget which one it was), and his response was such a pathetic, simpering display of moral cowardice that I never went back.

The entire point of USSC decision was to return the issue to the states. As much as I hate abortion- still it would be pretty disingenuous to then return it back to the federal government. That would make Trump look very bad IMO. Not something to do before the election anyways.

93% of abortions in the US take place in the first 13 weeks. Trump is preferable to Biden but the Republicans are basically taking a de-facto Pro-Abortion position without admitting it. We’ll step in and defend a few babies from late-term abortion/infanticide. Seems like basically the Hannity position. He only wants to talk about infanticide. In fairness to the Republicans, the electorate is selfish and even potentially murderous. We failed 52-48 to ban abortion in our Constitution in Kentucky in 2022, and Ohio put it in theirs in 2023 by 57-43. The state of the electorate is pitiful, maybe on the verge of giving the horrible Biden four more years to destroy the country. It seems like the Republicans slowly surrender on everything. Gay Marriage, drug legalization, abortion. I’m waiting for them to start surrendering on gender insanity.

What a crock.

Pro-life conservatives hate abortion, but they also know they are in the minority and that banning abortion is a sure political loser.

They know if President Trump talks about banning abortion, he will lose, and the abortion-loving Democrats will win, and that as a result far more unborn babies will die.

So since we want less abortions, we know we need to STFU about abortion bans and we need to stop badgering our pro-life candidates into taking a hard line on abortions.

Pro-life conservatives are smart enough to understand this dynamic, and they are glad President Trump understands it.

This is yet another example of the Left underestimating Trump supporters…

Trump is for a ban, but he has to get elected to make this stuff happen. He can’t get elected without some support from women. Stop the pearl clutching.

Pity the parents of the unborn person don’t see the right to life and it takes a lawyer to save the day..
A constitutional amendment might do the trick.

A bit of opportunity lost, but everyone needs to realize that Trump is a moderate, not a conservative. And, yes, we see conservatives get themselves all twisted up trying to explain themselves.

Trump missed a bit of opportunity here:

Trump could have said the Supreme resolved this as a federal by reversing Roe v. Wade.

Done. Trump could have said this is now a state-level issue.

Done. Trump could have said he personally objects to abortion except in the case of...

Not Done. Trump could have recognized that the federal government has a continuing role, which he could then lay out: no federal money for abortions, no abortions at federal facilities, and no federal advocation for abortion.

Not Done. Does the federal government, does an administration of a role, have a position on what states should set at limits--even if not at/after birth.

The whole matter is going to be one of threading the needle. If Trump objects to abortion, he should say so, even if allowing some or all of the above.

And lastly, what of this is or should be under the label of conservative, moderate, liberal, etc.

When does life begin, when do we say wrong to take it.

Ideological preferences of yours aside (as in ‘due process’ which is abandoned by abortion in your view) it is STILL a STATE issue (just like most murders, crime, etc.).

Many abortion opponents talk about “the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.” I agree. But that phrase is ONLY in the Declaration of Independence. It, particularly the right-to-life part, is NOT in the US Constitution anywhere.

You try the highest level crime first and then, if you’re like this sniveling government and want to punish what you can’t get under state laws, go for ‘infringements of civil rights,’ ‘due process’ and other made up ‘rights-to’-(take your pick.)

Thank you-these people stamping their feet and wanting to control every state’s laws are not much different than liberals in my opinion-neither seems able to allow others to decide where their own morals and beliefs lead them...

When??

Here is the video where Trump says he will negotiate with the left to find common ground for federal legislation.

Trump: I "don't frankly care" if abortion is regulated at federal or state level

Here is Trump saying a 6 week ban is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake. Then he launches into "we will come up with a number"

Trump ripped by right after calling DeSantis’ six-week abortion ban ‘terrible’

Excellent post. It’s become extremely apparent who the actual Christians are in the Republican party. The fact that Donald Trump, a man famous for speaking his mind, is afraid to tell the truth about the left’s abortion holocaust shows that this country is far past the point of return. Or perhaps Trump just simply agrees with the left. He only talks about the exceptions to abortion bans that he wants.

He has explicitly said he likes a 15 week ban and that he opposes a 6 week ban.

But that phrase is ONLY in the Declaration of Independence.

I just want to make the point that The Declaration is our founding document and came before the Constitution which expanded upon the tenets, ideas and beliefs of the signers. Who, if caught, would have hung for treason. There was much more at stake by signing the Declaration than the Constitution.

That being said even though I believe this to be a human right - Life - at this time in this nation and culture's existence, we need to focus on a state by state reversal of abortion by changing hearts, minds and laws one state at a time.
