Putin's Oil Industry Is in Trouble
Newsweek ^ | March 29, 2024 | Isabel van Brugen

Gasoline production in Russia has fallen after a series of strikes by Kyiv on the country's oil refineries, figures show. Rosstat, Russia's Federal State Statistics Service, said that in the week ending March 24, the nation's production of motor petrol fell by approximately 7.4 percent to 754,600 tons compared to the week prior, when production was at 815,300 tons, local media reported.

Moscow depends on its oil exports and energy industry, which make up some 30 percent of the country's budget revenues and are crucial for the funding of the war in Ukraine.

Kyiv ramped up its attacks on Russian refineries beginning this year. On January 18, Ukraine launched a drone attack on a St. Petersburg oil terminal, about 620 miles from the Ukrainian border.

Another of its drone attacks, near St. Petersburg on January 21, struck a major gas export terminal—a Novatek PJSC gas-condensate plant in the port Ust-Luga—causing a huge fire and halting fuel supplies. Ust-Luga is Russia's largest Baltic port, and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed responsibility for that attack, the Kyiv Post reported.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that the refineries forced to stop operations over the space of a week were collectively responsible for 12 percent of Russia's national oil refining capacity. Reuters estimates that figure has now risen to 14 percent.

The latest oil hub to have halted operations due to Ukrainian drone attacks is Russia's Rosneft-owned Kuibyshev mid-sized oil refinery near the city of Samara on the Volga river, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing two industry sources. The facility was struck last week...

The head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk, declared this week that it is behind all attacks on Russian oil hubs and that they will continue, spelling more trouble for the Russian leader ahead...

With China’s backing and Biden constantly cutting our domestic production? I doubt it. Sanctions coupled with ramping up our own supply to the world market likely would have stung. But Biden’s constant attacks on our own energy production negated that.

This is all inaccurate.

The Russians report oil in tonnes. Tonnes per year, typically. There are about 7.5 barrels/ton of CRUDE. Not gasoline. Gasoline is lighter.

Russian production of oil is floating along at about 9 million BARRELS per DAY, in accordance with OPEC+ agreements. This is down from 11ish.

It is 5-6 million bpd MORE than domestic consumption.

As for refining, they refine about 5.5 million barrels/day (that’s with a non-7.5 barrels per tonne conversion). As noted they consume less than this domestically, and, pay attention here, the Urals crude blend is diesel heavy. Everything coming out of refineries is not gasoline.

I did my own calculations of refinery capacity offline, and I used very pessimistic (from a Russian perspective) estimates. It is very clear what Reuters has done is presume one light payload drone that happens to arrive at a refinery will take 100% of that refinery offline, and hold it offline since that day, with no repairs or restoration taking place.

A more reasonable, and pessimistic, estimate is a low payload drone can take out 50% of a refinery’s function, and it will take 2 weeks to restore it, which frankly is very pessimistic because you won’t lose 50%, you’ll lose a natural gas burner maybe, and that has a spare on site and will replace in hours.

But even with my pessimistic estimates, capacity loss would be about 4% average in a given week.

These journalists have no engineering background.

Biden put a stop to that because gas prices were already starting to go up. Not good for his reelection chances.

How many civilian oil workers do you think Victoria Nueland had shot in that Crocus City Hall massacre? That might affect oil production.

March 5, 2024

Russia’s oil and gas revenue jumped more than 80% in February from a year earlier to over $10 billion due to higher prices for the nation’s crude as its producers withstood Western sanctions.

US Diplomat Says Russia Should Expect 'Surprises' On Battlefield

US veteran envoy Victoria Nuland visited Kyiv on Wednesday in a sign of support two years into Russia's invasion, saying Moscow should expect "surprises" on the battlefield.

Nuland, who is acting deputy secretary of state, visited the Ukrainian capital as fresh US aid to the war-torn country hung in the air, with Republic lawmakers growing reluctant to keep supporting Kyiv.

"I leave Kyiv tonight more encouraged about the unity and the result, about 2024 and its absolute strategic importance for Ukraine," Nuland said.

"I also leave more confident that, as Ukraine strengthens its defences, Mr. (Vladimir) Putin is going to get some nice surprises on the battlefield and that Ukraine will make some very strong success," she added.

She praised Ukraine for fighting back Russian forces for almost two years, saying it had "inflicted massive damages on Putin's land forces."

Ukraine's counter-offensive, launched last year after huge anticipation, has nonetheless been less successful than expected and the front in Ukraine has barely moved in months.

Putin said Wednesday that Russian forces were holding grown on the "outskirts" of the east Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, a fighting hotspot that Moscow has been trying to capture for months.

But Ukraine's military spy chief, Kyrylo Budanov, said Tuesday that he thought the Russian offensive could halt in the coming months.

"Their offensive is still continuing, it will run out sometime in the beginning of spring," he predicted, without providing details, on Ukrainian television.

The most important real and severely pertinent news is that India ceased buying Russian oil. Russia now has only one export customer of significance, China.

The impact on production is going to be devastating to the Russian economy dependent entirely on export oil revenue

Payments to the Russia worshipping Freepers may cease because there are no longer funds to pay propagandists

“India ceased buying Russian oil”

Did they stop selling it to them at $30/barrel discount to the Brent Sea crude spot price?
