When I received my acceptance letter almost a decade ago to the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington D.C., my imagination raced with the intense, life-or-death scenarios I would be confronted with on a regular basis in order to protect and serve the citizens of our nation’s capital.

But even while contemplating such scenarios, I never imagined what I experienced on Jan. 6, 2021, or that I would be one of a few dozen officers standing in between former President Donald Trump’s fascist dreams and American democracy. The attack on the Capitol, perpetuated by a mob commanded by Trump, was and still is an existential threat to both my city and the country at large.

The world looked on in horror as thousands of Trump’s most loyal followers overran police barricades, stripped law enforcement officers of our equipment and savagely beat us. They looked us in the eyes and called us — the ones protecting the Capitol — traitors.

It is necessary to remember her and her death was far more egregious in my opinion.

There is a tiny bit of wiggle room for shooting an unarmed young woman who is standing in a broken window inside the Capitol, but there is NONE for beating to death an unarmed older lady who is already on the ground outside the Capitol.

That was murder. No doubt.

And the capo police defenders need to have her hung around their necks.

Good one. By the way, Edwin Booth is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Ma. Visited the cemetery many years ago. Julia Ward Howe (Battle Hymn of the Republic) is buried there as well, along with other well-known people.

I started watching the AppleTV+ series titled "Manhunt," which covers the 12 days Hunt for Booth and his accomplices. Unfortunately it's based on a book that has no footnotes or sources, so they play loose with the actual facts. For example, they showed Mary Lincoln accompanying her husband's body on his funeral train, along with her dressmaker Elizabeth Keckley. That never happened. She dragged her feet for weeks before finally leaving the White House and settling in a hotel in Chicago, and Mrs. Keckley remained with her all that time. The only reason I decided to watch it is that the actor who plays Booth, Anthony Boyle was just featured in "Masters of the Air," playing Harry Crosby, navigator for the 100th Bomb Group in WWII.

For anyone who is interested in the truth about the assassination and the hunt for Booth, I highly recommend Michael W. Kauffman's "American Brutus: John Wilkes Booth and the Lincoln Conspiracies." It is a well sourced and documented record of what occurred. I met Kauffman many years ago when I attended several Booth symposiums in Maryland. I am acknowledged in his book as one of the researchers who provided him information I'd found along the way during my own research.

There is only one reason why the National Guard was not allowed on the grounds of the Capitol. There would have been too many witnesses that could have come forward as to what really happened! Pelosi and the Mayor knew what the set up was. All they needed was less than 25 to 50 people in the Capitol to create the headline that they used since 2021! How many National Guardsmen would have been high fiving Trumpers? You know why they didn’t want the Guard there!
