A white New Jersey man who unleashed a racially charged viral rant and spat at his black neighbors sobbed in court Friday as he was sentenced to a lengthy stay in prison, apologizing for his “insensitive and disrespectful words.”
Edward Cagney Mathews, 47, will be mandated to serve four years of an eight-year sentence for pleading guilty to four counts of bias intimidation as well as possession of a controlled, dangerous substance with intent to distribute, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Superior Court Judge Gerard H. Breland made the ruling on Friday after a tearful Mathews spent the last two and a half years locked up in jail.
“Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future,” he said in his statement to the court while shackled and handcuffed. “I want to commit to rebuild the community.”

This sub human is a real dirt bag. He’s really lucky someone didn’t pop him when he was out on the street.
Headline is misleading. The dude did all sorts of crap for a long time. He deserves this sentence.
In fact, Mathews (white guy in the green shirt) was a drug dealer who'd been terrorizing his neighbors for years. The video shows one man finally standing up to him.
Here's another video of Mathews telling another neighbor that the police are "his people" and won't do anything to him: VIDEO
Mathews belongs in prison.

There was a time in America when conservatives would condemn an 11 time violent felon who got busted for drug dealing.
However, in today’s America, it is clear that many conservatives oppose sending 12 time felons to prison.
Many people (on the left and the right) make assumptions based on their own personal experiences.
But, IIRC, when this story broke two years ago, freepers did check further and found this guy was a creep with a history of terrorizing his neighbors.
This particular article’s headline is misleading. Some people must not have read the rest of it. Hard to believe anyone would defend this creep after reading about everything he did.
"I want to commit to rebuild the community."
Uh, no thanks, jerk. All you have to do is leave other people alone, something the rest of us learned in kindergarten.
Here’s more information about NJ’s “Bias Intimidation Law”: https://www.michaelschreiberlaw.com/blog/2021/08/understanding-new-jerseys-bias-intimidation-law/
It states, “A person needs to commit an underlying offense to be charged with bias intimidation.”
It gives an example of a woman who threw objects at a motel front desk clerk. The woman was charged with assault, disorderly conduct, and harassment. Because she yelled racial slurs while committing those crimes, she also was charged with bias intimidation.
Here’s the article about that incident: https://www.burlingtoncountytimes.com/story/news/2021/07/23/super-8-bias-incident-trzeciak-delco-development/8064341002/
That article says the police chief “has said people cannot be charged for using racial slurs, and that a bias-intimidation charge requires evidence of an underlying offense.”
“ Only whites are punished. Blacks can say anything they want.”

You noticed that, huh? Exactly as PLANNED!

Thanks. Did any of the good folks in that BLM mob get charged with “bias intimidation” for their utterances occurring while they were committing underlying crimes (e.g., property destruction, assault against prople). Of course not… none were likely even charged for underlying crimes.
I don’t know. Some news articles say two arrests were made and police were checking surveillance video for others, but I can find no further information. I hope anyone who vandalized or committed violence was charged, but I wouldn’t be surprised if all of them weren’t caught.
This guy terrorized his neighbors for years and got away with it. The police finally did something after a video went viral. But, police rarely do much in neighborhood disputes. My folks and their neighbors were terrorized by one family for many years, and the police were never any help at all. And, when I was a young mother with a baby, my family was harassed (including feces spread at our front door). All the police did was take a report and ask what we said to the local kids to make them so angry. So, the police are rarely any help in these neighborhood situations.
