A white New Jersey man who unleashed a racially charged viral rant and spat at his black neighbors sobbed in court Friday as he was sentenced to a lengthy stay in prison, apologizing for his “insensitive and disrespectful words.”
Edward Cagney Mathews, 47, will be mandated to serve four years of an eight-year sentence for pleading guilty to four counts of bias intimidation as well as possession of a controlled, dangerous substance with intent to distribute, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Superior Court Judge Gerard H. Breland made the ruling on Friday after a tearful Mathews spent the last two and a half years locked up in jail.
“Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future,” he said in his statement to the court while shackled and handcuffed. “I want to commit to rebuild the community.”

Yet gang bangers, murderers, those that assault and many others are routinely released with no bond. I don’t get this.
You are an idiot if you cannot see that anti-white bias.
No one gets eight years for spitting and shouting.
If that were true the entire population of Newark would be incarcerated for life.
Edward Cagney Mathews is just another malfunctioning convicted felon who cannot handle life in a free society and did all he could to return to the comfort of the state prison culture.
But calling for genocide of Jews is just fine in NJ.
All that aadi, as foul as this is, it’s free speech. If he wants to act like a douche, that’s his right and problem. Shouldn’t be a crime.
” as well as possession of a controlled, dangerous substance with intent to distribute”
VERY misleading headline
Well yeah. Fair is fair.....right? 🤔
All those videos on X and other places of non-whites ranting away and the Deep State looks the other way.
”as well as possession of a controlled, dangerous substance with intent to distribute”
Apparently, convicted felons distributing drugs and assaulting people is now, by some, considered free speech
The sentence for drugs with intent to distribute is reasonable. Any claim of “bias intimidation” is pure BS and an obvious first amendment violation. The first amendment includes the right to be insulting and offense.
You have no right to not be offended.
Defendants can, and often do, wave their right to a speedy trial. Some, anticipating conviction and long prison sentences, and expecting to get credit for “time served”, would rather sit in a county jail pending trial, than in state prison. If this miscreant had prior prison time, he might have reason to make that choice.
Is threatening people, assaulting people, destruction of private property and placing biohazards on other people’s property also covered under your version of First Amendment protections?
Threats have to be "true threats"...ie real and immediate and to a specifically identifiable person to be actionable.
Speech is not assault.
Speech is not destruction of private property.
Speech is not placing biohazards on other people’s property.
If there are other things to charge him with, fine. Then charge him with those things. "Intimidation bias" is a violation of the first amendment.
I forgot about this option. As you suggest, it's likely what happened. Tks.
Edward C. Mathews’ right of free speech rights did not include threatening people, but did include his crying like a baby in that courtroom.
And the Post makes it sound like it was solely racially motivated. They start with the racial stuff, then mention drugs. Sound familiar?! Have to keep the race “issue” going. Pathetic.
Wrongspeech is properly punished.
