A white New Jersey man who unleashed a racially charged viral rant and spat at his black neighbors sobbed in court Friday as he was sentenced to a lengthy stay in prison, apologizing for his “insensitive and disrespectful words.”
Edward Cagney Mathews, 47, will be mandated to serve four years of an eight-year sentence for pleading guilty to four counts of bias intimidation as well as possession of a controlled, dangerous substance with intent to distribute, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Superior Court Judge Gerard H. Breland made the ruling on Friday after a tearful Mathews spent the last two and a half years locked up in jail.
“Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future,” he said in his statement to the court while shackled and handcuffed. “I want to commit to rebuild the community.”

So i guess large swathes of the black community will now be arrested when they harass white people that venture into predominately black parts of the cities.... right?
Only whites are punished. Blacks can say anything they want.
He was not sentenced to jail for insulting a negro. There was basically assault (spitting, chest bump) and possession of drugs. It also sounds like some of the neighbors are snowflakes. If it in fact comes to the point that one can be jailed for insulting someone then it’s over.

on the flip side, any of those hippies calling police ‘po-po’ or ‘pigs’ can not be arrested and tossed in jail for 8+ years.
Thank you, the headline was very misleading, the clarification about the drugs and assault should have been in the headlines and the spitting and name calling in the article.

Once he stepped on someone else’s property then all bets are off. Lots more to this than headline reveals.
After reading the NY Post link, the man did more than hurl racial insults. He also spit on his neighbor, put feces on his neighbor’s lawn and shot cars with BB guns. I have no problem with him being sentenced but the 4 years sentence is too long - IMHO. What I’d really like to know is why he spent the last two and a half years locked up in jail? Was he in jail waiting for trial? If so, he should sue the AG who put him in prison for being denied a speedy trial.

He was in jail for 2-1/2 years before he was tried? I thought only Jan. 6 political prisoners got that sort of treatment.
Be interesting to know how the perp, after a lengthy history of committing genuine crimes with impunity, came to be prosecuted now...

8 years for spitting and for hurting someone’s feelings?
That seems like a cruel punishment, but he’s white so it’s ok to lock him up.
