Just when you thought there were no parts of your life not already under the thumb of the federal government, a new idea emerges.

This time it comes from the National Transportation Safety Board and it involves outsiders having control of the gas pedal in your car.

While you're driving, of course.

The proposal from the NTSB is to install "intelligent speed assistance" tech in all cars, a system that uses a car's GPS location and local speed limit postings "to help ensure safe and legal speeds."

You can also bet that if the car does exceed the speed limit, once the governing switch/software is aware and activated... you will have to go to a mechanic to get it reset.

And I’d wager that before a mechanic can reset anything he will have to report it to law enforcement.

Basically not only will they (try) to limit your speed, you will also be driving with an onboard traffic camera whos only purpose is to ticket you.

Exactly. We have been discussing this aspect for years...and not just a few of us.

Can the rest of society be clueless enough to not make that connection?

I used to dwell on subjects where I would consider the possibility of the authorities using some thing in such a way that I would consider just...wrong, and I would think “Nah. Don’t think they would do that.”

I have found over time that there is nearly nothing I think unfettered government won’t do. Nothing.

And that is quite unsettling, to say the least.

I found lots of good info to extract off the Ford data busses. I also had to simulate 2 Nissan Infiniti cars to test the telematics unit. The Infiniti engineers visited my lab and were impressed to interact with a simulation of cars that were only specifications at their office.

One of the objectives of my simulators was to go into the field in a brief case and drive around the country interacting with the tower base stations from multiple vendors to identify any compatibility issues. At one point the company VP asked me to incorporate scripting capability in the simulator. That was an easy insert using "jython". Much of the code was in Java, so "jython" enabled writing python scripting. The actual simulator code was all C++ in Windows. There was some logging created for analysis of interaction with the field devices. All of that was aimed at reliability. It wasn't for snooping on a customer.
