Andy Kryza was offered the chance to relocate with his wife and young daughter..
The family, who had idealized Scandinavia
...
An American dad who moved to Sweden with his wife and young daughter has revealed the staggering differences in the school systems which ultimately forced the family back to the US.
Andy Kryza, from Los Angeles, said that he 'felt like he had won the lottery' after being offered the chance to relocate with his wife and young daughter.
The family had idealized Scandinavia, believing that Sweden was 'a utopia with happy people, gorgeous nature, and world-class schools.'
But he has since candidly laid bare that 'the grass wasn't necessarily greener' after making the move in 2021 - only to return two years later.
...
the pace of learning turned out to be a shock.
'We soon learned that in the early years of school, teachers mostly prioritized socialization and play,' ..
'We worried that our daughter would regress and forget the core math and science she had excelled with but assumed things would progress in year two. They didn't.'
...
Unexpectedly, our daughter began complaining about a lack of challenges.'
Andy mused that the pace was likely due to the teachers' policy of not letting kids fall behind as they 'paused advancement to ensure everybody was on the same page.'
He branded it as 'admirably progressive' but by eight years old he said his daughter 'couldn't do simple division and once asked us what science was.'
'When addressing our concerns with teachers, we were met with a cold: "This is how we do things here."
'Eventually, we had to decide whether to trust the Swedish system or move back to the US. We chose the latter to avoid letting her get too far behind.'

Sweden is a small country with respect to population, less than 10 million i believe. They have taken in how many Somalians and other Third Worlders, so much so that they can’t assimilate them (if assimilating them was even possible now matter how many there were). Lately the Swedes seem to be waking up to their problems - there were several posts here on FR recently abut it - and hopefully it’s not too late.
A long time “honey wagon” aka septic tank pump truck business
had the slogan painted on the trucks-
“Your Sh*t Is Our Bread And Butter”.
Smart move,,,,,within a few years the beautiful Swedish Culture will be gone and the Country will totally Islamic. The only thing Muslims teach their children is the Koran. By age 10 they cannot even count but can recite the Koran forward and backwards......
“it was Muslims who gave us much of what we have in math.” No, it was Euclid and Ptolemy and Descartes who helped placed a man on the moon in 1969.
Considering the state of American education, for Sweden to be that much worse, it must be really bad.

Erma Bombeck. One smart and funny lady.
The US educational system has its faults, as well. Kids get zero education in Baltimore. Maine is rated high but they only require 11 credits for hs graduation. Our nephew took his kids out of public school because History apparently didn’t exist before the Clintons. Those parents will still need to stay on top of their daughter’s progress.

Mistakes just stink...don’t they...we all knew what you meant...The language police are away for the weekend. Relax...we still love you!!
Every engineer in Town...
I’d donate big $$$ for an edit button. iPhone, screaming kids and FR are a bad mix.
It’s ok, we know what you meant.
Interesting. I went to Denmark and Norway on vacation years ago, but skipped Sweden. The Norwegians were fond of saying, “Ten thousand Swedes came through the weeds chased by one Norwegian”.
Apparently the Swedes never grew a backbone, The women are gorgeous though, and the men very good looking,
I tend to overwork things...an edit button would enhance my flaw. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
We’re #1 in the business of #2

Maybe, but one-third of Ethiopians are Muslim.
Where in the heck did they find an American school that taught Core Math and Science even back then?
After his daughter went back to an American school did she become his “son”?
... and here I was thinking that the reason was that schools were tougher over there ...
