An enraged McDonald’s customer says the fast food franchise is no longer affordable for ordinary Americans, calling the company’s contemporary prices “crazy.”
“So, I get there’s a labor shortage, I get there’s wage increases and a number of other things,” Idaho man Christopher Olive began in a viral TikTok clip, which has recently resurfaced.
“But $16? $16 for a burger, a large fry and a drink? It’s just crazy!” the flabbergasted content creator complained, panning to his itemized receipt from a McDonald’s restaurant in the city of Post Falls. The video was original posted on social media last December, but has now gone viral again after McDonald’s recently reported an increase in revenue directly influenced by a “strategic” hike in menu prices.

I’d rather go without than having to resort to putting stupid apps on my phone, in order to get discounts for $hit food, that shouldn’t cost that much to begin with. You’re not really getting a discount in the end, because you’re still paying more, even with the discounts, for the overpriced stuff. I cook at home, and despite the cost of meat and food from the store, it’s still cheaper than going to a fast-food restaurant.
$16 meals almost pays for the $15/hour the employees demanded
I don't know how it is at your McDonald's, but the one closest to me, which I don't visit anymore, could never get your order right, even if you went in to order it.
Yes! We stopped going to fast food places over 20 years ago, except when the grandkids beg us to go to McD's. It's all crap there.
My wife and I prefer to go to mom & pop restaurants, where the food is healthier and cheaper. For instance, a Japanese meal costs $20 for two, and we split it so it's $10 each, with large filling portions. Same with Thai, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and other restaurants. Filling meals under $10. Even western diners.
Here's where I show my age: When I was a teen, milk shakes were 18 cents, French fries were 17 cents, and burgers were 22 cents (deluxe cheeseburgers were 28 cents). Deli sandwiches, fully loaded on French rolls were 35 cents. My grandkids find it hard to believe me. Granddaughter offered me a Hostess twinkle last week and I laughed, 1/3rd the size when I was young and very expensive. I used to buy them for 12 cents in a two-pack.
Government caused inflation and smaller goods that cost more! $20 an hour minimum wage for fast food workers here in California mandated by Gov Newsom. And they thought prices wouldn't go up?
Yep.
McD's is now Five Guys prices and Five Guys are now Applebee's prices.
Bidenomics!
THIS is how McD Corp is handling the $20 Minimum Wage in CA: they’re bumping menu pricing across the entire country to “spread the load.”
OTHERWISE, you could still get a Big Mac Combo in Boise for $8 and change, but the same thing in CA would be pushing $25.
Five Guys has always been ungodly overpriced
They can’t have it both ways ($20 min wage and low prices).

McDonald’s CEO sends dire warning to California
“The fast food leader perceives a growing problem in the Golden State.

McDonald’s (MCD) - Get Free Report may have beaten earnings estimates late in October, with revenue climbing over 14% year-over-year, but CEO Chris Kempczinski still has his doubts.
The fast food giant, which reported Q3 earnings on Monday, revealed that the coveted same-store sales metric, which measures the performance of stores that have been in operation for at least one year, jumped 8.8% — notably higher than the 7.79% analysts had been targeting.

Across the U.S., revenue increased by 8.1%, thanks largely to “strong average check growth driven by strategic menu price increases,” as Kempczinski put it.
“The macroeconomic environment is unfolding in line with our expectations for the year, and we continued to deliver convenience and value for our customers,” he continued.

But just because the macroeconomic picture may be unfolding the way McDonald’s is predicting, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be meaningfully good for business in the long-term.
And one state in particular seems to be in the McDonald’s line of fire.
CEO issues economic warning to Californians
In mid-October, the state of California enacted a new minimum wage law which will push the hourly rate to at least $16. This brings it up by $0.50 — the previous state standard had been $15.50 per hour, and will remain so until the bill goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.
While some cities and municipalities with particularly progressive or higher cost of living already have a higher hourly rate in place, the law ensures every locality will pay its employees at the new established rate.

But there’s a catch. The law ensures all fast food workers — including those at McDonald’s and the like — will be paid $20 per hour, effective April 1, 2024. And a newly-established California fast food council may raise the rate again after January 1, 2025, according to the California Labor & Employment Law Blog.
McDonald’s foresees this as a direct opposition to its bottom line. ”
I do agree with the crap in our foods (and the modified foods), as something is definitely short-circuiting Americans regarding their health. Lots of potential culprits!
I went ‘88. Either way, WAY less than $16.
The McD's of the 80s was an order of magnitude tastier that they are today.
Go back in time and you wouldn't even recognize how juicy their burgers were and how crisp their fries were. And the milkshake machines were always working!
And not just McD's but everything. Systems that used to work fine in the past are now broken.
I recently paid $15 for a hamburger and a small fries at a Five Guys. (I never buy soft drinks—I ask for a free cup for water instead.)
Their hamburgers are much better than McDonald’s, and their “small”fries would be called “large” anywhere else.
Nevertheless, these are biden-era (anti-beef) inflated prices!!
“What do you suggest we do , as opposed to just standing by and letting McDonald’s run their business? Do you favor some sort of government intervention into their business?”
I’m just having some fun here. And, actually, I trust McDonald’s more than sit-down joints, because they at least publish ingredient lists - I don’t know what I’m getting at the higher-priced places.
Alright, I'll be that guy.
So you think when the state makes you raise your hourly pay rate and keeps raising your corp taxes and the covid nonsense, the business owner should continue the same prices even though it means losing money.
How AOC of you.
LOL!! I see Reno89519 has once again butted into somebody else's conversation, the same thing he whines about when somebody does it to him.
“Reminds me of several years ago my client asked me about my expense report wondering about my choices... McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Popeyes, Wendy’s. “
Funny, same here. I’m happier with food that I know and understand than being more, ehhh, ‘cultured’.
Mc Donalds has very good food. Unless of course you think you are a gourmet food snob
Good food but too expensive. Been twice...but won’t return.
Totally agree with you. I don't go to any of them, and cook all my meals at home. People are lazy BobL. That's the biggest problem.
I had to do some bulk buying yesterday, went to a Sam’s Club. I stopped at the lunch counter for 2 all beef hotdogs and a lemonade $2.49.
