One by one, GOP lawmakers—colloquially known as “moderates” or “institutionalists” or “establishment Republicans”—have recanted the unequivocal opposition to Jordan they expressed just days ago and thrown their support behind him.
The abrupt shift surprised Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA), who said on Monday afternoon that he believed “a bipartisan compromise speakership was inevitable just 24 hours ago.”
“The responsible governing types in the Republican conference,” Huffman lamented, “just fold like a cheap suit every time.”
Noting Jordan’s leading efforts to contest the outcome of the 2020 election based on bogus voter fraud claims, Huffman said the fact that Jordan “is going to be holding the gavel in the institution that counts the electoral votes… that is terrifying, frankly.”
“It’s just stunning that all of these Republicans would go along with it,” he said.

I could have sworn that the headline ready "pulling their hair piece out" but realized my mistake. However, I do think that would have been more accurate.
The article's author laments that there aren't sufficient GOP moderates willing to cross the aisle and work with Democrats. I bet that the author also believes that Queen Nancy was a strong leader and the straight party line of the Democrats showed how principled they were. Funny how being a moderate is only good for Republicans in the media's opinion.
The deliberate use of "Moderate", aka, RINO, as opposed to lockstep Democrats who vote as their told, or are de-funded, just shows the repeated talking point promotions of Fake News.
Wait until they count the votes.
About time our sise started steamrolling these pussies, instead of the commies.
Sounds like Jordan has it.
The only reason the MSM has come out to give cover to their Assistant RATS.
So True, but they usually fold to the Democrats.
Why would anyone read Yahoo news?
“Why would anyone read Yahoo news?”
I don’t. Every morning I do an article search on particular subjects to see what pops up, to get a feel for what’s trending. And for whatever reason, Yahoo has a lot of articles that are a window into the minds of the opposition.
I know one thing, their priority “reasons” why not to elect Jordan are BS. “He can’t raise as much in campaign funds as the others”. What about PRINCIPLES as a priority???
They don’t care about the people or this country at all, they only care about trying to keep their own asses in congress so they can soak the system.
I can’t figure out how this blatant and obvious fact is so hard to see.
iirc, there are 18 such R reps in districts that voted Biden....enough to stop Jordan.
Voting for Jordan as Speaker is not remotely equivalent to a presidential vote so fears should be easily assuaged by Jordan to those 18, and by those 18 to their constituents...
...but then again we know weak-spined RINOs
No the Florida Supremes were dead set on stealing the election, they made the mistake, what we are paying for is the Bush family's legacy.
It’s well past time that moderates fold!!!
Conservatives have been doing that for far too long!
If Jordan gets Speaker, he better remember who he is, and not acquiesce to DC Republican deep state moderates!
If you know your Constitution, you should know that if Article II, Amendment XII and the Electoral Count Act had all been followed, George W. Bush would have become President by perfectly legal and Constitutional means. There was no path for Gore to become President, no matter what SCOFLA did or didn’t do.
If the Constitution were followed, there was a small but non-zero possibility that Joe Lieberman would have become Vice President. In light of the Iraq and Afghanistan disasters, it’s unclear whether that would have been a good thing or not.
The courts were excluded from the electoral system on purpose, by men much wiser than what we have today. If Bush v. Gore was not a nonjusticeable political question, then there is no such thing and we should just have the Supreme Court appoint the President and save all those campaign donations from being flushed down the toilet.
The GOP is not on your side.
By now, through polling and other measures, most of the 18 have a good sense of how their reelection campaign looks. Since Biden has done a terrible job, my guess is that most of the 18 are fairly secure with Trump on the ballot, especially as incumbents, if they have a large campaign war chest, and no serious primary challenger.
Jordan as GOP Speaker seems certain to be politically and organizationally effective in pushing the GOP agenda, genuinely popular with the GOP base, and attentive to GOP member needs. That is a big plus for him. Neither McCarthy as Speaker nor Scalise nor anyone else as a possible GOP Speaker would offer that combination. So, even for fearful and unreliable RINOs, Jordan is the almost certainly the best choice.
Fox’s Chad Pergram advises there remains some hostility from a few toward Jordan for Scalise and McCarthy treatments, but he does not know how deep. I sense the anger will mellow, perhaps even after the 1st ‘protest’ vote.
A 1st ballot win for Jordan would signal “all in for Jordan” which many are not.
2 ballots, maybe 3 is my guess. Additionally, this is a short term appointment, to be redone in 13 months.
I think that you are fully on the mark.
You can't use the Constitution as an excuse to break the law and that is what Corrupt Florida Judges were doing.
The Florida Legislature appoints the Electors, correct?
In November 2000, that Legislature was in session, with large GOP majorities, and was prepared to overrule SCOFLA and appoint Bush/Cheney electors and transmit their votes to Washington.
Now, it is POSSIBLE that SCOFLA would have tried to illegally appoint Gore/Lieberman electors.
This has happened before, and it could happen again. The Founders certainly anticipated it happening, and prepared for it.
If SCOTUS had stayed out of it, when the Special Joint Session convened on January 3, 2001, it would have had to decide which Electors to count. President of the Senate Al Gore would have undoubtedly ruled for SCOFLA, which ruling would have been immediately appealed to the floor, where there was a Republican majority, each Representative and Senator having one vote.
The floor could have accepted the FLA Legislature’s Electors or it could have rejected both sets. If they accepted the legally appointed Bush/Cheney Electors, it would have ended right there. If they rejected both, no one would have had a majority.
THe two Houses would then have separated, and the House of Representatives would choose a President, voting by States, not by Members. Under those odd rules, California and Wyoming would each have one vote. There were 30 GOP majority State delegations and 20 Democrat majority State delegations, and George W. Bush would have been legally elected 30-20 in an hour.
When the Senate convened to elect the Vice President, the body was divided 50-50 since Jeffords (R-VT) had switched sides. In the event of a tie between Cheney and Lieberman, the President of the Senate Al Gore would cast the tie-breaking vote , and presumably Joe Lieberman would have been elected VP 51-50.
Allowing SCOTUS to take over this process, which had nothing to do with them and was outside of their authority, was a huge mistake. It messaged that the Constitution couldn’t be trusted to function as designed and that elections, which are supposed to be decided on Election Day, could no longer be trusted without special mandarins from Harvard and Yale Law Schools having their say.
