Titan sub debris field: Parts of missing sub's cover found, expert says
BBC ^ | 6.22.2023

Debris has been found in the search for the missing Titan submersible, reportedly including parts of its outside cover. Dive expert David Mearns told the BBC the president of the Explorers Club - which is connected to the diving and rescue community - says the debris includes "a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible". The US Coast Guard earlier confirmed a "debris field" had been found within the search area. It was located by a remote-controlled underwater search vehicle (ROV) near the wreck of the Titanic. A US Coast Guard news conference is scheduled for 1500 EST (1900 GMT) on Thursday afternoon. The Titan vessel went missing in a remote area of the North Atlantic on Sunday with a four-day oxygen supply for its crew of five.

Some experts have speculated that it could have suffered a catastrophic implosion as a result of a hull failure. The minivan-sized submersible was owned and operated by the private company OceanGate Expeditions. The firm's co-founder, Guillermo Söhnlein, told the BBC that he believes there may have been an "instantaneous implosion" of the craft. "If that's what happened, that's what would have happened four days ago," he said.

There was a front viewport... which turned out to be rated to only 1300 meters.

I just watched the Coast Guard presser a few minutes ago. The ROVs have found the fishtail cover on the rear and the metal frame it sits in. They say the actual hull most likely imploded and there is zero chance of any survival based on the evidence.

The families have been notified and the Coast Guard will start to pull out in 24 hours time and the ROV’s will continue for awhile.

They didn’t rescue the missing people in time.

That’s what would be sad.

The bad news is that all passengers have perished. The good news is that they died instantly.

Judging by the reports, there was never going to be a chance of rescue.

Yes, there have been many lawsuits to try to prevent RMS titanic inc from selling over 5,000 artifacts at auction.

It very well is a brittle fracture with extreme amounts of strain at the time of catastrophic failure. However, there still should be some amount of abnormal strain and increased stress monitored since, if it was weakened by fiber failures incrementally, the stress and strain would be different from previous missions.

But, this is coming from a white 55 year old with experience on composite aircraft structure engineering....so im not as inspirational.

Those people were dead. The implosion probably happened when they lost contact Sunday. The Coast Guard said if they had imploded after they had assets on the scene that their sonic buoys would have recorded it.

There are no bodies to find.

Part of me wonders if it really did implode, or if that’s the official story because the thought of them dying a slow and terrible death, devoid of hope, is so disturbing to the families of the lost and others. I would personally like to think it happened quickly. Either way, what a tragedy, and it did not have to happen.

What if it was sitting on the sea floor when it imploded? Would that influence the size of the debris field?

The official press conference - this link will take you to where they describe what they found: https://youtu.be/rYXHnruTguM?t=990

They found the rear fairing (though the guy said nose) first outside the debris field. Then they found the front end bell of the pressure hull, the viewport unit, in its own debris field. Nearby they found the aft end bell of the pressure hull and some remains of the hull itself in its own debris field. The debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion.

Left unsaid is that there won’t be any identifiable remains after such an event. And I mean identifiable as in ‘there won’t be anything you can tell was part of a human body’ not even ‘can’t tell who it was’.

I read where it had a seven inch thick plastic nose window. I any event, I watched a Youtube video on a friends 80” flat screen of the latest pictures of it and it was impressive, esp. the dum dum dum music she had playing at the same time.

It would be a single debris field if it had been on the bottom - per the press conference, they didn’t make it to the bottom, but they were (relatively) near it. It will probably take computer modeling to figure out how far above the ocean floor they were.
