Poll: Donald Trump GOP Primary lead ‘appears insurmountable,’ Ron DeSantis under 20%

Trump has 'what appears to be an insuperable 36-point lead' over the Florida Governor.

New polling of the 2024 Republican presidential race offers good news for Donald Trump and red flags for Ron DeSantis.

“Trump’s edge, when it comes to his own party, again appears insurmountable at this early stage of the nominating process,” claims the memo accompanying the latest I&I/TIPP Poll.

The story is a familiar one of traction for Trump and doldrums for DeSantis. The former President’s 55% support gives him “what appears to be an insuperable 36-point lead” over DeSantis’ 19%.

Other names are even further back.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has 6% support, followed by former United Nations envoy Nikki Haley and current South Carolina U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, both at 3%. Author Vivek Ramaswamy and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu each have 2% support, meanwhile, with other names further back still.

The poll of 482 likely Republican Primary voters was in the field May 31 through June 2, before Trump’s federal indictment and before Sununu ruled out a run for the White House.

The 36-point Trump lead is well above the margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points for the Republican and Republican-leaning sample.

This poll is in line with the Race to the White House polling average, which shows the former President with 55% support, against 22% for DeSantis.

Race to the White House, at least at this point, sees a lopsided delegate fight. It forecasts Trump with 1,862 delegates in a crowded field, well above the 1,234 needed to win, with DeSantis mired at 539.

In a field that narrows to Trump and DeSantis after Nevada, the landscape is more forbidding still for the Florida Governor. Trump is projected to have 1,971 delegates in that scenario, with DeSantis garnering just 484.

Yo9u can also take THIS to the bank...

If any state tries to keep him off the ballot, or if the feds or any state tries to restrict his movement or communications, the USSC will slap them down.

DeSantis is in real trouble on national primary day! Oh right, it’s state by state.

It goes without saying that Bernie had Biden on the ropes until one state - SC - turned the tables and Sanders was immediately done. All it takes is one state to pierce the mirage of inevitability and a lot of voters will flip. It certainly could happen since Trump might be forced to campaign Jim Traficant-style which might sow enough doubt in the minds of voters actually seeking to win instead of making a foolish point in defeat.

Why is Sununu in there? He declined to run over a week ago.

Bernie never was going to get the nomination. SC just changed the momentum and that's what they wanted and had the chance to do it.

Bernie would have been the nominee if not for Clyburn. Facts.

MAGA will vote against the GOPe, even if that means for a Democrat, because Uniparty means Uniparty.

Agreed. I think that will be the case if Trump is in any way removed from this election, regardless of how.

Facts don't bare that out. Berne won the Iowa caucusus, big deal, then NH and union NV, that was about it until he edged him out in CA, Biden pretty much ran the table after that not counting VT, Utah and some other small states

“Populism” is just another way to say “consent of the governed.”

And they don’t like having to get our consent.

Sorry Surrender Monkeys but DeSantis is now doing Jack Smith’s work and voters know it.

The leadership of the GOP have said, repeatedly, that they will not allow Trump to be the nominee.

And, they have the power to do what they say.

Why don’t you believe them?

“Leading” in a fake contest where the referees have announced the outcome is meaningless.

In fact, electing Trump if those in power do not intend to allow him to exercise the powers of the office is also meaningless.

What we need to save the nation is POWER. As we have amply seen in the past 40 years, getting elected to office does not confer power unless those who have it say so.

I like Ron but he should suspend over the corrupt DOJ and build some goodwill for next election. Unfortunately, his managers cannot make money in that.

Looks like we will have a Republican candidate that has no chance to win the general. Sad.

But that was the pivotal point. Biden looked as listless and clueless as possible. Kamala was calling him a racist on the debate stage, and he had no response.

When Clyburn endorsed Biden, he came out and said he wasn’t happy with the way Biden’s campaign was running and expected him to make some changes to turn it around. If Clyburn had endorsed Sanders who was already 3-0 going into SC (or anyone other than Biden), Biden is done.

Who was going to stop him? They weakened superdelegates’ voting power as a compromise after crooked hillary stole the nomination from him in 2016. Bernie was undefeated going into SC. Usually that means you’re on a glide path to the nomination.

Well, I guess that is it then.

And with the election in two weeks, why bother trying.
