A majority of Republican voters believe former President Donald Trump is the best Republican presidential primary candidate to defeat President Joe Biden in 2024, a Monmouth poll found Tuesday.

The poll asked respondents, “Regardless of whether you currently support Donald Trump, which of the following statements comes closest to your view about which Republican has the best chance to win in 2024”

Donald Trump is definitely the strongest candidate to beat Joe Biden

Donald Trump is probably the strongest candidate to beat Joe Biden

Another Republican would probably be a stronger candidate than Trump

Another Republican would definitely be a stronger candidate than Trump

Overall, 63 percent said Trump has the strongest chance of defeating President Joe Biden. Thirty-two percent said someone else.

Of the 63 percent who said Trump has the strongest chance of defeating Biden, 45 percent said Trump is “definitely” the strongest candidate, while 18 percent said Trump is “probably” the strongest.

Of the 32 percent who said someone other than Trump would be the strongest candidate, 19 percent said another candidate would “probably” be stronger. Just 13 percent said another candidate would “definitely” be stronger.

The poll also found Trump (43 percent) leads Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (19 percent) by 24 points. Since March, Trump’s numbers improved by two points, while DeSantis’s shrunk by eight points.

The poll sampled 655 Republican voters just before DeSantis entered the GOP primary from May 18 to 24, 2023, with a 5.5 percent margin of error.

Although Trump crushes DeSantis, both candidates have high favorability ratings among Republicans: Trump 77 percent, DeSantis 73 percent.

Trump “holds an advantage in practically every Republican voting bloc, with the noticeable exception of college graduates,” the poll found. “Three months ago, DeSantis led among major demographic groups within the party.”

Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said DeSantis has yet to make a case why GOP voters should vote for him over Trump.

“DeSantis lost ground even before he got out of the starting gate. Republican voters still like him, but they haven’t heard a convincing case for why he would be the party’s best option,” Murray said.

Probably correct. Meatball may have lost all those same voters who came out of woodwork to fizzle the red wave in 2022.

If it looks like he can win (despite Democrat machinations), they will kill him.

It is quite incredible when we discuss the ‘chances’ of beating the most corrupt and inept President to have ever occupied the office.

I’d like to see Trump pick Vivek Ramaswamy as his VP. I’ve heard him give his views a number of times on Newsmax and I agree with 99% of them.

As long as no-excuse mail-in ballots are allowed without any signature verification, as was done in AZ in Kari Lake's election, then the 'counting' will be simultaneously stopped on Election Night, and they will manufacture however many cheat-ballots are needed to give it to the Dem.

RINOs were happy for this to happen to Trump in 2020 and Lake in 2022, and we should not expect anything different in 2024.

It's obvious the state legislatures are unwilling to enforce voter ID. Maybe Kari Lake's appeal will reach SCOTUS, and a favorable ruling there would apply across all states. It's about the only hope there is left.

from May 18 to 24, 2023

DeSantis didn't even announce but until the evening of the 24th.

These numbers are guaranteed to change, and they won't be in Trump's direction.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight, just like he did in 2020. Dems will NOT allow Trump a second term, it's not going to happen, UNLESS, republicans learn to cheat better than dems.

Democrat cheating alone was not enough for Biden to 'win.' It needed the complicity of RINO traitors in the republican-majority state legislatures in order to get away with it. If everyone with an (R) after their name in the state legislatures had used that body's constitutional power to enforce voter ID, Trump would still be president and Kari Lake would be governor of AZ. Instead, they allowed the counting to simultaneously be stopped on election night while enough cheat-by-mail ballots with no chain-of-custody or signature verification were created to put Biden ahead in the count. And don't forget about how Republican observers were either blatantly shut out of counting rooms or were lied to about a pipe leak and told to go home while suitcases full of ballots were counted after hours and all on camera. They got away with it all in 2020, and the only ones in prison are the people who peacefully protested against the Steal on 1/6/2021.

How do we know if the poll is legit? Have the respondents been vetted or did they just assume they were honest like people assume mail in ballots are legit?

It’s a shame that there are too many dumb-a** republican politicians who will refuse to throw their support behind Trump as the GOP candidates. It infuriates me. I’m praying for a GOP President and a GOP House and GOP Senate. Time for big changes.

Unless they really want the shooting and mass assassinations to start, I don't they would dare. Maybe they do. But if something "unfortunate" should happen to Trump, DeSantis would be a pretty good backup. He's my second choice (and the more unjust attacks on my governor, the closser he come to my first choice; but I try not to be ruled my emotions).
