“She’s contributed so much, and she has the kind of character commitment to this country that we want in young immigrants.”

India supplied the highest percentage of foreign students at U of Chicago when I went there. I never found a middle ground in the Indian students I knew. Fifty fifty. Half of them were so good the earth trembled under their feet. I sat in on a class in Astrophysics from Chandrasakar. They don’t get any better. But the other half were not of the average caliber of our students and you learned to sprint around desks when alone in the classroom with them. We all knew who to avoid and we knew the quality students that were worth the time and effort to know and to date. My assumption has always been that the lower quality students got in with money.

Chinese students are a different situation. That’s why the liberals are trying to keep them out of the best colleges. Because they’ll trample everyone else into the academic dirt. The children are trained up from an early age to study night and day. They go to extra academies. They focus on English. And they don’t take the summer off to enjoy a rest. Every year gets more and more intensive until their college entry exams and the burden on those young shoulders is intense. They get into colleges because they know how to do what our own students don’t anymore - study!

I’ve noticed that nursery/kindergartens in our area are beginning to put up advertising that they speak Mandarin. The students who migrated to the US and have begun raising families here are going to be as strict with the academic upbringing of their kids here, even though the environment in the US won’t be as supportive for the students as back home.

There are good facts in your post. I was hired by a manufacturing outfit in 1963. My boss liked my work so from then on, my boss expected every Indian to be like me, and then any Indian who walked in through the door was immediately hired. Pretty soon we had 6 Indians working in my department, responsible for design and stress analysis of metal working machines. That 50-50 rule you mentioned was pretty damn close. We also had 2 Chinese, 1 Russian and 1 Japanese American in our group. The Japanese American was brilliant mathematician. The Chinese guys had good work ethic but not very good at creative thinking.

They seem to rule the UK NHS...and kill Brits by the thousands, if you look at all those Daily Mail articles. And then there are those from Nigeria et al.

Stupid. Third World standards lead to Third World countries.

Oh good grief with this earth trembling and chinese trampling everyone dramatic talk. I’m fully acquainted with what Indians and Chinese are like in these universities. Chinese are not that great. Raised with more math. Advisors like them because they slave and know the value of cross-stealing work. And there’s millions of them, can locate a platinum streak in the fools gold pools of fish. And many of them assign their school work to others to other chinese in china cheap. They resort to what they have to to compete, and their patrons doctor test scores to push the “whites for business, asians for math” and guess who to lead them all at the very top.

And their code is horrible ... yet they control the industry ...

And their documentation, when it exists, is worse! I never hire Indian programmers.

Chinese students in the US are notorious for cheating and often collude to do so.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my life to work with the best of the best for the majority of my career. IBM Research wasn’t hiring easily and for sure they weren’t just hiring locally. We had researchers from every part of the world and they were magnificent. The international standards group brought everyone together and working with them was pure joy. I headed our professional organization and ran conferences and newsletters. There weren’t any losers to be found and one’s background was only interesting, not important. This was the melting pot that I saw that was America.

I was Secretary to this group and the people in the video were the main names of that field.

If they’re so damn great, how come they gotta come here to “do well”?

It’s a thug gang. Hired a guy who was half Sikh half Anglo (mommy, it’s always the mommy), he’s still referred to as “he who shall not be named” in my former company after the crap he pulled.

And their supporters here in the US do all they can to assist. You may remember as I do at least one occasion ETS had to issue an advisory about GRE test scores from China because, among other cheats, somehow test questions on future tests (not simply old questions for practice) were leaked on a couple of websites in China.

US universities still took them. Especially regarding grad students, true caliber is actually not the priority for the departments.

I forgot to mention that one of the Indian women could not code herself out of a paper bag.

But the other one covered for her.

My son is (the) plant chemist for a decent sized factory that makes heat resistant rubber products (think radiator hoses etc). The boy is a genius in organic Chemistry…I took one class and got a C+.

Anyway they have quite a few foreign born degreed people he told me he likes them all….except yep you guessed it.

The Indians. He said they are terribly smug and overconfident and think they know everything while actually often wrong.

American medical schools limit the number of physicians. These days the limitor set is number of internships and residency seats available. Anything to limit the amount.

I believe it. My wife’s nephew is a podiatrist and just got his first position as a Doctor. He is apple pie American; Ky Mom, Tennessean dad and raised in Indiana.

I swear he has been in college for 10 years, had to get a congressman’s recommendation to go to school, kid is smart straight A student. Cost him I don’t know how many 10s of thousands of dollars.

No way you’ll ever convince me those Indians and Paks by the 1000s go through that much. A few RNs have privately told me as much by the way.

I have to say that I’m not impressed with universities in general. I was in the Red team for the contest to design the Department of Defense common language, that became Ada. It was two companies from the military/industrial complex (Red and Blue) and two from universities (Green and Yellow). What I saw was handwaving from the university teams and down and dirty completeness from the m/i teams. This led to some pretty bad mistakes, such as Blue spending tens of pages to explain how True and False worked. Green used a single sentence, as I remember. Green also made an initial design decision that their reference manual would be 50 pages. It was basically all handwaving. In the next to last phase, Green came 1st and Red second. Our principle designer was in Germany. He came back and redid our language from scratch. But the reviewers were already trying to get a headstart on the money that would flood in and were committed to books and courses teaching Green. Green got the French Legion of Merit for designing the American defense language. Red got the contract to fix the Green language that had been handwaved.

Then there was my work with two university professors for newspaper poetry of the late 19th century. What I quickly found was that the Emeritus professor had no expectations for the quality of data he would be given because the work was so extensive his grad students would never have done it. So he was used to doing his own calculations on limited data. I gathered together some experts and we shoved data to him designed to let him “grok” the results so fast that he could turn around each stage to get deeper into the problem than he ever expected. That was the difference between people trained in the military/industrial complex and people trained in universities.

So most universities won’t get high expectations from me. And the standards that have degraded them, as well as the lower grades, don’t give me greater confidence in what’s being taught or the quality of students coming out. If cheating is rampant, I can’t even be shocked.

A large number of “immigrants” in IT that I have met in the US come in through Canada...some are even citizens of Canada. It is easy to drive accross the border with no enforcement of anything.

Note, I am not commenting on whether this is good or bad, just the fact that it occurs, Now, what Satyam consulting firm did could be called bad almost objectively.

Who is “they” ?

I have talked with many immigrants, legal and illegal. Some do
lie. Some do not lie. Generalizations cannot be made without
them also being lies.
