Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis reportedly will seek to suggest he is stronger on saving lives of the unborn, but former President Donald Trump told Newsmax on Tuesday there is no state abortion laws without his doing.
"First of all, I'm the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do," Trump told Tuesday's "Rob Schmitt Tonight" in an exclusive 15-minute phone interview.
"It's been now brought back to the states, and what I've done is I've given the pro-life people — who are wonderful people and loving people — I've given them the power of negotiation, because now they're able to negotiate something that's going to be very important, and I put them in a position now."
Trump hailed the confirmation of three conservative justices during his administration — "very few people have been had that privilege, the honor" — who "happen to believe that Roe v. Wade should not be there," effectively usurping states rights on abortion law.
"DeSantis, or Ron DeSanctimonious as I call him, he came out with the six weeks" abortion restriction in Florida, Trump continued. "Other people agree with it, and a lot of people don't."
But DeSantis has Trump to thank for all of it, and Trump vows "to be leading the charge" on setting future law and precedent on where the line on rights for the unborn should be in America.
"We're in the position now where we can get something that the whole country can agree with and that's only because I got us out of the Roe v. Wade, where the pro-life people had absolutely nothing to say."
Restricting abortions and protecting the unborn is not a "radical" position, according to Trump, knowing abortion is a Democrat election rally cry for votes.

Trump noted DeSantis is losing support for moving fast on his abortion restrictions, even if he might agree with them personally.
. . . .
Trump said being able to restore states' rights on abortion and "doing what's right" for the country is helping him surge to a huge lead in early GOP primary polls and even leading the incumbent President Joe Biden.
"I think it's why I'm leading him by 40-50 points, and you see that, and I'm leading Biden by 11 points," Trump said. "I do what's right for the country, but I gave the pro-life people — and I'm the only one, again, I'm the only one that ever did was I able to.
"There's nobody that thought it was possible to do what I did with Roe v. Wade and now because of what I did, we have a very powerful negotiating position — more powerful, frankly, than the other side.
"When we had Roe v. Wade, we had no power whatsoever. They were killing babies 7 months, 8 months, 9 months, and after birth, OK? We had no power. Now we have tremendous power. We actually have the edge, and we'll pick something that's going to be very, very good for pro-life."
This is splitting hairs, Trump, trying to maintain some level of relevance. The real battle has shifted to the states, and DeSantis is one of many governors who has successfully addressed this. Trump should be setting this in a positive manner to take credit for what he accomplished at the federal level, and to cheer on what governors and state legislatures are doing at the state level. This is a win-win topic not a win-lose topic as Trump presents it.
Trump is speaking out of both sides of his mouth.
Here he is claiming he got rid of Roe v. Wade.
Yet here he is again criticizing the 6 week abortion ban.

Trump, trying to maintain some level of relevance
...
Oh, he’s relevant.
He’s also a former Democrat billionaire that embarrassed the R team of Bush,Dole,Bush,McCain,Romney..
Those 4 years was like a breath of fresh air from the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama era.
Amazing what an America First/Swamp last candidate and then President can accomplish in a swamp.
That’s got to sting at their Swamp meet ups..
No. Mitch is the one that kept Garland out
I agree, Mitch kept out Garland.
If Hillary wins, Garland is in and we are cooked.
Trump could have picked a lame nominee, but we got Gorsuch.
I had to laugh at that line.
It is typical of some people, insisting he isn’t relevant and covering their eyes so they won’t have to see the mean tweets.
If they had another set of hands to plug their ears while covering their eyes, they would do so.
Trump did not get rid of Roe. He appointed good justices which I will give him credit for. But SCOTUS got rid of Roe, which would not have happened without Alito and Thomas, neither of which was appointed by Trump. Now he talks about a compromise federal law which will never pass. He does not understand for pro life people there is no gray area. Life begins at conception. Am i grateful for DeSantis signing the 6 week ban ? you bet. Does i’d go far enough? No. And Trump thinks it goes too far proving hd does not understand the pro life view
Mitch kept Garland out....Absolutely!
The “I was ‘pro-life’ before YOU were pro-life!” and “I’m more anti abortion than YOU” arguments are a tactic to defeat and destroy the Right. This is more than just meddling on the part of M1tt and J3b, although it contains large elements of that. Of COURSE our totalitarian overlords are going to foster jealousy and hate, claiming that Trump didn’t do enough. Of COURSE they’re going to gloss over the fact because of Trump’s foresight and dedication that States are now able to pass laws limiting or eliminating the operation of abortion clinics and criminalizing its practitioners.
In the psych world, this is called “splitting” and it’s too bad the GOP are too lame, incompetent, and/or corrupt to see that.
Also: The Roman Catholic church is a limb of globalism operating to destroy our Constitutional Republic.
desantis is the one who signed a pro-abortion law. When did Trump ever do that?
So, Trump says this is too restrictive, you say anything that allows an abortion is bad, DeSantis managed to get the legislature to approve a six week limit. Other governors have set 12 weeks. I guess at the end, you’re going to criticize anything to Santas does, to support Trump, correct?
Desanctomonious signed a law making abortion legal, period. You can spin that anyway you want, but the bottom line is he supports abortion by deed. Trump got Roe v. Wade removed from the law books by deed. Action speak louder then words.
No he isn't.
Here he is claiming he got rid of Roe v. Wade.
He did.
Yet here he is again criticizing the 6 week abortion ban.
Rightfully so. Florida had the chance to firmly stop abortions. Florida had a bordering State as an example of how that's done in Alabama. Florida women can still murder their babies. I guess Alabama women can still travel to Florida to commit the murder of their unborn children and I'm sure they will thank Florida for making it so.
Provide the quote of Trump saying that.
Agree. All those Rs speaking but Trump took effective action and provided true leadership in this matter.
Unfortunately, this probably IS a "win-lose topic" in today's political environment.
Since Roe v. Wade has been overturned, pro-life measures have been hammered in public referendum votes everywhere they've been put on the ballot -- including some of the most heavily Republican states in the U.S.
