As headlines about the frosty relationship between China and the United States are dominated by spy balloons, Taiwan and botched attempts at diplomacy, commanders in the Pentagon are increasingly worried by a more insidious threat: Beijing's growing stronghold on Latin America.
From tens of billions of dollars in funding for key infrastructure projects across the region to its own secretive, military-run space station in Argentina that could target American satellites, China's presence has grown.
Some 21 countries in Latin America are signed up to Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative - a defining policy introduced by President Xi Jinping in 2013 that wins power and influence by funding global infrastructure projects.

not the canal. that is owned by panama.
this refers to balboa, cristobal, and (not sure if they have the concession) rodman ports.
the allegation that china bought the canal is one of the more common lies about panama here, presumably from people that don’t know the difference.
I don’t think many people realize just how vulnerable the canal is in terms of modern warfare.
I’m with you. China in Africa is another boondoggle. They wont call it “colonialism” and accuse the CCP of ‘white supremacy’.
That’s racist! (Sarcasm…)
Aren’t ALL canals?
What will China do when the projects aren’t completed because the money is stolen and then the projects “nationalized”.
i am not familiar with suez, I would assume it has key vulnerable points, though it cannot be drained as I understand it - it is a sea-level canal (or between 2 sea levels). ditto other canals?
Panama’s can literally be deprived of water aside from all the other vulnerabilities.
Great. Just great. More good news.
Great. Just great. More good news.
You bring up a very good point. If China acts like the colonial power it wishes to be, then the leftwing establishment and their media will have to invent some new terms.
Then again, they are already saying you don’t have to be white to be a white supremicist.
What will China do when the miscellaneous South Americans fail to hold up their end of the bargain? They’ll do the same thing they’ve been doing so successfully in Africa: they’ll point to the fine print in the contract before taking possession of the property involved — land, ports, infrastructure, natural resources, etc. The Chinese aren’t fighters, they’re a merchant race, and that’s how they do business.
Huh? Biden and much of DC elites are on China’s payroll. The military knows that.
The “space station” in question. Similar to facilities the USA built in the southern hemisphere to track space missions

The world saw that when that big ship got stuck sideways in it a few months back.
Well Earth is in space I suppose...
You mean it’s not Turtles all the way down?
It used to be turtles all the way down. Not anymore though. Now its bubble universes all the way down.
This article doesn’t even capture the full extent of what is going on.
While the US blows its wad in idiotic wars in the Ukraine against has been world power, reminiscing about the Cold War, we have the PRC (our new threat and peer) crawl up our back.
The PRC is a powerhouse, both economically and militarily.
They are a threat and are expansionist and militant with us having many points of potential conflict: Taiwan, Spratly Islands, North Korea...
Unless we choose to abdicate and simply resign to the fact that eventually they will be number one and call the shots, as we have been, conflict is inevitable. All this BS talk about the world being big enough for both of us is garbage.
