Britain’s fertility regulator has confirmed the births of the U.K.'s first babies created using an experimental technique combining DNA from three people
Britain's fertility regulator on Wednesday confirmed the births of the U.K.'s first babies created using an experimental technique combining DNA from three people, an effort to prevent the children from inheriting rare genetic diseases.
The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority said fewer than five babies have been born this way in the U.K. but did not provide further details to protect the families' identities. The news was first reported by the Guardian newspaper.
In 2015, the U.K. became the first country to adopt legislation regulating methods to help prevent women with faulty mitochondria — the energy source in a cell — from passing defects on to their babies. The world's first baby born using the technique was reported in the U.S. in 2016.

The biggest foot you can get into any door is a doctor’s
“ The nuclear DNA of the baby is made up SOLELY of contributions from the nuclear DNA of THE TWO PARENTS with NOTHING FROM THE EGG DONOR.”
……………………………………………………………………………
Really?
Then why does the article say DNA from 3 people
********************************************************************
Because the writer did not clearly and completely explain things. There is a difference between the cell’s NUCLEAR DNA (which resides in the cell’s nucleus and which is derived solely from the TWO PARENTS’ DNA) and the DNA of the mitochondria (which are organelles that reside in the cell’s cytoplasm). In the case of the subject procedure the mitochondria (and its DNA) originated in the DONATED (from the 3RD PERSON) egg used in the procedure. You should research this on your own since much of modern medical developments are coming from research at the molecular cellular level and IT’S VERY INTERESTING.
Don’t reproduce. Adopt. It’s the only way this will go away.
You can fool Mother Nature for a while, but Father Time WILL catch up with you.
THAT’S GONNA BE FREAKISH.
“KHAAAAAAAAAN”!
Thank you for the clear explanation.
A lot of folk don’t know basic science, including the person paid to write this article.
This is an abomination!
She’s a journalist, with a fancy overpriced degree. This makes her significantly less knowledgeable than your average beat reporter writing seventy years ago.
So was this a non-vaccinated person and a vaccinated person? 3 different sources of genetic material.

That’s for sure. Many current journalists are quite ignorant, have poor writing skills and it seems that frequently it take a team of them to put together a short, non-expansive article.
God brought the flood over this kind of stuff.
Born of a “throuple”?
Interesting, to keep a kid from having a fatal illness, I’d say great. But anything else (like a threesome marriage and everyone wants to give the baby some genes) hell no!!
Lord have mercy, help these children, open the eyes of the (self) deceived adults
Thanks nickcarraway. You're on a roll!
Years from now, when two of these chimeras meet and hit the mattress, is it a menage a trois?
I’m not sure how that would happen without genetic manipulation.
How do you know that?
If this pans out, a kid that may have died, might grow up to cure a form of cancer, figure out how to neutralize nuclear waste, or do all kinds of beneficial things.
(That’s one of my arguments against abortion. We don’t know what an aborted baby might have done if he or she lived - and we don’t know what one saved from death might do.)
