Former President Donald Trump has surged to 62 percent support in April among Republican primary voters, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has crashed to 16 percent, Emerson College polling trends show.
Since January, Trump has gained 20 points over DeSantis, when the former president held 55 percent of GOP support, with DeSantis at 29 percent support, a 26-point spread.
In February, Trump gained four points over DeSantis for a 30-point advantage. Trump’s support remained constant with 55 percent support, while DeSantis’s dropped four points to 25 percent.
In April, Trump surged 16 points from February over Desantis to a 46-point advantage. Trump’s support increased by seven points to 62 percent, while DeSantis’s plunged nine points to 16 percent.
According to the Emerson data, Trump’s GOP support remained mostly consistent throughout January and February, while DeSantis’s slightly dropped. The drastic separation between the two presidential hopefuls began after news of the Trump indictment broke on March 31. A few days later, Trump was arraigned in New York City.
Following the indictment, Trump’s polling numbers soared to 46 points over DeSantis’s. Trump’s dominance was somewhat at DeSantis’s expense. DeSantis lost nine points of support, while Trump’s support grew seven points, a nearly inverse correlation.
The data suggests the indictment has united the Republican Party behind the former president. Trump has appeared to galvanize support by harnessing the seemingly endless far-left attacks against him that have continued even after his presidency.
In one sentence on his Truth Social bio, Trump neatly packages those attacks into a call for support.
“THEY’RE NOT COMING AFTER ME, THEY’RE COMING AFTER YOU—I’M JUST STANDING IN THEIR WAY!” it reads.

He will not be “allowed” to run, much less win.
Except he's not "doing the work of his state" at all. He's been traveling all over the place acting like a presidential candidate.
For heaven's sake, he just signed a hate crime bill into law today ... in Israel.
RDS had the audacity to think he could beat Trump in the primaries, the man who made him a somebody from a nobody.
“He needs to distance himself from the neo-con RINOs, who are pushing him so hard to enter now.”
Trump knows the value of publicity.
And so does Ron DeSantis.
I’ve said this for months, and I’ll continue to repeat myself:
The only obstacle standing in the way of Trump being the GOP nominee is Trump himself.
I like DeSantis better than Trump, but I’ll support and vote for Trump.
Unless he first self destructs.
Good to see Vivek inching up. I hope he lands at #2. A distant #2 from Trump but solidly at #2.
DeSantis’s numbers crashed during the week he received the Bushes endorsement and flipped on Ukraine.
Perhaps the most important thing to grasp is this isn’t the result of Trump attacking DeSantis. It’s the events, flow and course of history that’s like a lava flow carrying all of us. The swamp is afraid and KNOWS they are on the wrong side of it.
I just saw it reported RdS is going to announce next month, announce an “exploratory committee”? Surely that’s not true unless it’s a way to back out and attempt to save his credibility for ‘28.
“Governor Ron DeSantis today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with South Korea-based LowCarbon Hydrogen Corporation to create a research hub for clean hydrogen technology in Florida. The company plans to develop a clean hydrogen facility in Polk County, Florida, and is set to break ground in June 2023.”
Florida sunshine can make hydrogen, which can be stored.
It’s too late for Ronny boy. He’s been exposed as just another GOP republican. People won’t give him a second look in 2028.
“The only obstacle standing in the way of Trump being the GOP nominee is Trump himself.”
There are packs of ‘rats trying to impede the way.
“Ron DeSantis could probably coast to the 2028 nomination. He needs to distance himself from the neo-con RINOs, who are pushing him so hard to enter now.”
totally ... desantis needs to 100% support trump now and through trump’s 2nd term and receive trump’s endorsement for 2028 as the embodiment of a 3rd trump term ... with the overwhelming poll trend towards trump right now, persisting in opposition to trump in the primary would be fatal for desantis’ political future ...
and besides, a REAL leader doesn’t need a damn committee to tell him what he should and should not do ... does anyone here think Trump had a committee to tell him what was right and what was wrong?
Mike Pence is catching up to Desani… sad
Republic primary polling means nothing to me.
Saw brief Pence interview last evening. He looked confident and energetic. Might be what the Republican party needs to beat Biden. I want him in the fight.
“The Dem gamble is that Biden can only beat Trump”
yep, just like they thought trump was the only candidate hillary could beat ...
“flipped on Ukraine”
Flipping made Charlie Crist flop.
Good observation. I agree if true.
On top of spaghetti
All covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When somebody sneezed
It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
And then my poor meatball
Rolled right out the door
It rolled through the garden
And under a bush
And then my poor meatball
Was nothing but mush.
“Pence...looked confident and energetic.”
He must have gotten a shiny new knife.
