IN GENTLENESS THERE IS STRENGTH
The parents were devastated. Their young adopted daughter had died in an unusual accident. She suffocated when the drawstring on the hood of her jacket became caught in a playground slide. It was later learned their child was not the first to die this way. Design flaws in both the hood and the slide made this an accident waiting to happen. Some people might have viewed this tragedy as an opportunity to sue the two major corporations for a lucrative settlement. The parents, however, refused. In an interview, the mother said she would have seen any remuneration as "blood money". She and her husband believed the leaders of the two companies never intended to harm her child or any other child. Instead of a lawsuit, the parents appealed to the clothing and slide manufacturers to correct the design flaws which had led to the death of their daughter. Both companies took immediate action. Today the parents are leaders in a campaign to promote child safety, and the companies involved have contributed substantially toward their cause. It is not always wrong to sue. There are times when it is the prudent thing to do. It seems, however, that our society has become increasingly litigious, suing without discretion for profit and personal gain. In light of today’s litigious climate, one cannot help but be moved by the choice of these parents not to sue. Instead they chose a "higher ground", earning not only the willing cooperation of both companies, but strong allies in their campaign to promote child safety as well. We might say they took the "pure, peaceable and gentle way" described in the third chapter of James in the Christian scriptures (James 3:17) as opposed to the adversarial way offered them via the courts. An ancient Native American saying reads, "In gentleness there is great strength". Dag Hammarskjold, former Secretary General to the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, put it this way, "Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing so gentle as true strength". In the end, the gentle, peaceable way of these parents demonstrated the greater strength and wisdom. CAPT Jane F. Vieira, CHC, USN

Greater Love
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
John 15:13Just days before Holy Week, when Christians around the world remember Jesus’ sacrifice and celebrate His resurrection, a terrorist stormed into a supermarket in southwest France opening fire and killing two. After negotiation, the terrorist released all but one hostage, whom he turned into a human shield. Knowing the danger, police officer Arnaud Beltrame did the unthinkable: he volunteered to take the woman’s place. The perpetrator released her, but in the ensuing scuffle Beltrame was injured and later died.
A minister who knew the police officer attributed his heroism to his faith in Jesus, pointing to His words in John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Those were the words Christ spoke to His disciples after their last meal together. He told His friends to “Love each other as I have loved you” (v. 12) and that the greatest love is to lay down one’s life for another (v. 13). This is exactly what Jesus did the next day, when He went to the cross to save us from our sin—as only He could.
We may never be called to follow the heroism of this officer. But as we remain in God’s love, we can serve others sacrificially, laying down our own plans and desires as we seek to share the story of His great love. .
Reflect & Pray
How do you react to stories such as that of Arnaud Beltrame? How can you serve someone sacrificially today?
Dear Jesus, You died to give me life everlasting. May I live with gratitude for this gift and share it with those You put in my path.

Well, drat. It sounds like no “you” time today. I guess it’s too much to hope you get some tomorrow since you’ll be getting ready for pay week.
Today went quite well. It was busy but it was steady, not overwhelming. The weather was gorgeous and that was good for the bikers doing the poker run. It was a 100-mile circuit and that wouldn’t have been much fun if it had rained.
The guy who owns the British APC was there today to change the oil and do other maintenance and when he was finished, he took people for rides in it. I went twice. LOL

Hey there, radu!
It was great. Not too hot...not too chilly for mid-April. Did you have a fine time at the museum today? Did the Poker Run happen and did you have a lot of first-day visitors?

Glad to hear you had nice weather. We did too. Upper 70s at the museum and it was 80 here when I got home this afternoon.
Now rain is moving into TN ahead of a cold front. Tomorrow will be in the mid 60s.
We had a good turnout at the museum today. People in the area have been waiting for it to reopen. We had a lot of first-timers and had some “repeaters” who come every year to see what changes have been made.
And I did get to ride in the British APC - - twice. LOL
