I think everyone should check the “black” box. If 90% of Americans are black, what happens to reparations?
The real question will be “Did your ancestors own slaves?” With the records being easily available via genealogical websites, this information will be compiled and then used for various ‘purposes’. If, for example, publicly available historic census forms show that your ancestors had slaves in their household, watch out.
What about those who fought to free the slaves?
I have two GGGrandfathers who took up arms for the Union; one of whom became very ill with typhus during the siege of Petersburg.
I have a Great Uncle and a GG Uncle who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the Union...one of whom was wounded in action and died in a Confederate prison camp.
My wife has ancestors who fought for the Union; one wounded at Little Round Top at Gettysburg; another who survived Andersonville.
Screw “reparations”—we’ve done our part!
jeez, the next census cycle is only 7 years away.
Bluntly I hate the race checkbox in the consensus. It hides real cultural differences.
Heck a white skinned person in Harlem has more in common with his neighbours than with a white skinned person in Connecticut.
And similarly a black skinned person in Louisiana has more in common with their neighbours than eith a black person from Senegal or a black person from Manhattan.
We should ask for ethnic origin if at all. And definitely about family wealth and earnings. That latter would give more useful data to help the poor rise out of poverty
I’ve been doing my family genealogy for about 20 years. One of the first things I learned is that censuses are the biggest load of crap you come across while doing your research. Take everything with a grain of salt. When searching, make sure you use a combination of the letters in your family name put in any order. Nothing you find is entirely correct. You’re going to get 5 million bucks, new cars, a home, an annual salary of $190,000 for TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS and the bass turds think a negro is going to say, “Nope! No Slaves in my family tree.” ROTFL. Honor system my ***!
Irish were slaves for 100 years under British rule. I swear.
So every Jewish person checks the slave status box then, right?
If you go back far enough everyone has an ancestor that was a slave.
I self-identify as a reparations recipient...
That would be me:
Anglo Saxon esnes under the Normans
Huguenots, under French Catholic rule, before fleeing to the Americas.
And, closer to home times, G-Grandfather, in a sense: fled Bavaria to The Netherlands, before emigrating to the USA: virtual slave, as an unwillingly indentured apprentice stonemason.
My wife is Irish & Welsh descent: enough said there.
Can’t ask about citizenship because that’s racist /s

California is surprisingly 98% Black after the next Census data is released

Why yes. Yes they were. Gibsmedat.
I guess I’ll have to check the black box, since I have been paying for the great society for my whole life. I have been enslaved by the federal government and I want my gibs!
My people wuz Kangs back in the Egyptian Pyramid daze.-— ping—— So reparations now! I will settle for five million dollars to set me up in me new abode in Nigeria or sub-Saharan whatever. Where we can be Kangs again! In Wakanda.
Not the stupidest idea government ever did, just one of them. We’d actually need an AI search to find the stupidest because there’s so many.
I don’t answer their stupid questions. I answer the number of people in the household and for the race question, I check Other and write in American.
Last year we got the 40 page American Community Survey. I have no idea what happened to it. Must have gotten lost somewhere around the house.
