I think everyone should check the “black” box. If 90% of Americans are black, what happens to reparations?
The real question will be “Did your ancestors own slaves?” With the records being easily available via genealogical websites, this information will be compiled and then used for various ‘purposes’. If, for example, publicly available historic census forms show that your ancestors had slaves in their household, watch out.
RE: I think everyone should check the “black” box.
Isn’t it a felony to lie on a census form?
Why on Earth would anyone admit that their ancestors owned slaves, even if they knew that?
What about those who fought to free the slaves?
I have two GGGrandfathers who took up arms for the Union; one of whom became very ill with typhus during the siege of Petersburg.
I have a Great Uncle and a GG Uncle who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the Union...one of whom was wounded in action and died in a Confederate prison camp.
My wife has ancestors who fought for the Union; one wounded at Little Round Top at Gettysburg; another who survived Andersonville.
Screw “reparations”—we’ve done our part!
Well, considering the one drop blood, I’m pretty sure if we dig back 2000 years quite a lot of folks have one “bkack” ancestor. Especially if one uses the incorrect logic of all “Africans” being black
jeez, the next census cycle is only 7 years away.
Bluntly I hate the race checkbox in the consensus. It hides real cultural differences.
Heck a white skinned person in Harlem has more in common with his neighbours than with a white skinned person in Connecticut.
And similarly a black skinned person in Louisiana has more in common with their neighbours than eith a black person from Senegal or a black person from Manhattan.
We should ask for ethnic origin if at all. And definitely about family wealth and earnings. That latter would give more useful data to help the poor rise out of poverty
Well technically then you should get some reparations too.
I’ve been doing my family genealogy for about 20 years. One of the first things I learned is that censuses are the biggest load of crap you come across while doing your research. Take everything with a grain of salt. When searching, make sure you use a combination of the letters in your family name put in any order. Nothing you find is entirely correct. You’re going to get 5 million bucks, new cars, a home, an annual salary of $190,000 for TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS and the bass turds think a negro is going to say, “Nope! No Slaves in my family tree.” ROTFL. Honor system my ***!
At least a Veteran's pension.
I hate all of those type of checkboxes to and refuse to mark them off if I camn get away with it.
Irish were slaves for 100 years under British rule. I swear.
ABA Legal Fact Check: It Is Illegal to Refuse to Answer Census QuestionsUnder the relevant census law, refusal to answer all or part of the census carries a $100 fine. The penalty goes up to $500 for giving false answers. In 1976, Congress eliminated both the possibility of a 60-day prison sentence for noncompliance and a one-year prison term for false answers.
However, the fine could be significantly higher than $100 for purposely avoiding questions. The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 increased the fine for any criminal misdemeanor to as much as $5,000, effectively raising the penalty fiftyfold for refusing to answer a census question. Any prosecution would be handled by the U.S. Department of Justice, and a census spokeswoman has said, “We view this approach as a last resort.”
In fact, there have only been a handful of prosecutions for noncompliance in the history of the census, and none since 1970, according to media reports.
I have Jewish blood in my veins.
Half the world either tried to or enslaved the Jewish people.
Check, please!
Ditto here. 2 of my ancestors from NH and 2 from VT died in the Civil War.
I want my blood money!
But more than that, I and a lot of folks that don't know it descend from WHITE slaves.
People captured by the St. Francis Indians, marched to Quebec, most sold to the French as slaves, a few kept by the Indians as slaves.
But wait! There's more!
I also descend from Quebec French, some of which may have owned some of my English ancestors.
Do I owe myself reparations?
There are few pure bred blacks who descend from slaves in the USA.
Do a lot of them owe themselves reparations?
I found out at age 50, after my father was long gone, that I am at least 1/8th French.
From my father’s side.
Someone at least owes me an apology!
So every Jewish person checks the slave status box then, right?
If you go back far enough everyone has an ancestor that was a slave.
