As court debates student loans, borrowers see disconnect

WASHINGTON (AP) — Niara Thompson couldn’t shake her frustration as the Supreme Court debated President Joe Biden’s student debt cancellation. As she listened from the audience Tuesday, it all felt academic. There was a long discussion on the nuances of certain words. Justices asked lawyers to explore hypothetical scenarios.

For Thompson, none of it is hypothetical. A student at the University of Georgia, she grew up watching her parents struggle with student loans and will graduate with about $50,000 of her own student debt.

Thompson and her father are each eligible for $10,000 in relief, she said. It would move her a step closer to financial stability, Thompson said, and it would eliminate the rest of her dad’s loans.

Ella Azoulay, a 26-year-old who lives in Washington, visited the rally to join the push for debt relief, which she calls a “family issue.” A 2018 graduate of New York University, Azoulay has $40,000 in student debt, while her dad has more than $400,000 taken out on behalf of her and her two siblings.

“I can’t really think about my future without thinking about this huge debt,” she said. “My dad has no plans to retire. He’s in his 60s and he has said for my whole life that he will never be able to retire. And that’s really upsetting to hear.”

Kayla Smith, 22, joined Thompson at the overnight campout for a seat inside the court. A recent graduate of the University of Georgia, she also felt the discussion missed the bigger picture.

Smith’s mother borrowed more than $20,000 in federal Parent Plus loans to help her pay for college. Smith sees it as the result of a broken system that forces people into debt for a shot at social mobility.

Pelosi already said Biden couldn’t do this.

College is a scam for almost everyone.

Avoid the debt by avoiding college.

I paid for my own damn' college back in the 1980's and again in 2006-2007 to complete a second degree. I also paid in full for both my sons college.

I'm NOT paying for anyone elses' kid(s).

You took out the loan, you pay it back. If you refuse, I'm going to demand you start paying my mortgage.

Fair is far 'n all that b.s.

The Supreme Court SHOULD apply a very simple test to cases like this:

“If it’s not clearly written into existing law, then is this something that Congress can approve, and do they have the time to approve it.”

In most cases, Congress will have the time to approve it, as in this case. In extreme emergencies, then the Administration may have to act on its own...although it could be challenged later on if it continues (such as 15 days to ‘flatten the curve’).

...but just a pipe dream.

At issue, does the government have the right to void contracts?

No mention of the fields in which these people received their degrees. I'm guessing "Underwater Basket-Weaving," "Social Justice Studies," "Grievance Studies," and the like.

Anyone willing to take on that much debt - frickin' $400,000! - better have an extremely high level of confidence that that bet will "pay off."

If his bet doesn't pay off, then that's not my problem.

Smith sees it as the result of a broken system that forces people into debt for a shot at social mobility.

No one is "forced" into debt. If they are concerned about not being able to pay off the debt, then they should remain in their lane / stay at their previous social level.

Regards,

Everyone one of those grifting examples are adult children who made the choice to borrow money for an education that could not support the debt. They should have been wiser.

As always, forgotten are those who paid off such debts, What of those who were wise enough to not follow the fools path and made their own way, never becoming a debt slave? Now they want those who are responsible citizens to pay for their folly.

Even mustering all my Christian values and morals I can find ZERO sympathy for them.

Romans 13:7
Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

But Pelosi said he could pause them. My prediction... Biden writes an EO that will allow the deadbeats to push the debt off until they die.

I came out of college with as much money in the back than many students had in debt. GI benefits plus working a job while attending college allowed me this “privilege”. And I still graduated “cum laude”.

Screw’em. Pay your friggin’ debts!

The problem with many things in life is .gov. Too much government in colleges has pushed up prices, like just about everything else. The reason these borrowers grandparents could go to college via working partime or by saving was there wasn’t a student loan industry driving up prices. Same for medicine.

I don't think the plan is to void the contract. I think the plan is to steal our money to pay off the debt.

Just look at S.S., Medicare, Obamacare, or just about any govt program, they already have voided those contracts. What they tell you in the beginning is all peaches and cream. Then years later it's nothing but shit sandwiches for the rest of your life.
