White House: GOP, Trump officials ‘laid the groundwork’ for loose railway regulations

The White House on Wednesday blamed Republican lawmakers and the Trump administration for lax railway and environmental regulations in the aftermath of a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, that spilled toxic chemicals.

Andrew Bates, a deputy White House press secretary, argued congressional Republicans and former Trump administration officials “owe East Palestine an apology for selling them out to rail industry lobbyists,” pointing to past efforts to loosen regulations.

“Congressional Republicans laid the groundwork for the Trump Administration to tear up requirements for more effective train brakes, and last year most House Republicans wanted to defund our ability to protect drinking water,” Bates said in a statement.

“There is only one way they can prove that they are finally disowning their long history of giveaways to rail industry management at the expense of communities like East Palestine: work across the aisle with us to put Obama-Biden protections back in place and go further, including with higher fines for rail pollution and properly equipping the EPA,” he added.

Ain’t my fault Ain’t my fault Ain’t my fault

The Democrats mantra after they have screwed something up ... which is everything they touch.

No. It was the unions that were against it because it would have reduced the labor force that monitored the tracks; Biden rolled over to the unions to prevent a rail strike over this.

Oh B. S.

This has been a soft underbelly issue for decades.

That has been the case with our power grid also.

#33: "If reports are correct, there were two hot box detectors that failed ahead of the Ohio derail."

Thanks for fleshing out all that. I suspected something along these lines. It looks like the money saved by not properly maintaining the detectors is going to haunt NS for a long time. Penny wise, pound foolish.

“effective train brakes,”

I would love to hear how this was a braking issue.

What morons? Simple solution to prevent another East Palestine is to lower the speed limits of trains carrying highly toxic materials through populated areas. Lower is to 20 miles per hour instead of 60 or 70 on open areas. A hundred or more car train will weigh 10 million pounds or more and the mass versus moment impact of 20 miles per hour versus 60 or 70 miles per hour is unbelievable. Speed limits should have been in place many years ago with hazardous materials. Why didn’t Pete think of that????????

Democrats aren’t to blame for the derailment either - accidents happen. But they botched the response, so creating a debate over the “blame game” is to distract from their slow reaction to this disaster, because the GOP could not have had anything to do with that at the Federal level because they were not in charge.

What good are regulations if the democrats ignore them and, say, burn thousands of gallons if vinyl chloride in an open pit ?

Oh ya, forgot, regulations only apply to Republicans.

Then they break them and blame others for it.

1. The Trump administration ender 2+ years ago. There was plenty of time for Biden to act on whatever deficiencies he thought needed correcting.

2. Trump somehow ‘laid the groundwork’ for loose railway regulations?

The only train safety rule passed over by Trump’s Transportation Department was an EXTREMELY expensive, failure-prone automatic braking system. The Ohio disaster’s cause had nothing to do with runaway trains or braking. The offending car’s axle needed greasing. The Democrat-owned train company didn’t pay to have it inspected or maintained, and Biden’s Transportation Department failed to enforce the rules.

It’s just like Deepwater Horizon.

It is not true and this has been debunked by several sources since put out the facts the past week.

If Biden can’t maintain a train car’s axle then how does he expect to maintain an extremely complex nationwide automatic braking system.
