WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy should lead the way on crafting a solution to the debt ceiling deadline so the United States can keep paying its bills.
“I can’t imagine any debt ceiling provision passed out of the Senate with 60 votes could actually pass this particular House,” McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters, referring to the threshold to break a filibuster and pass a bill. “So I think the final solution to this particular episode lies between Speaker McCarthy and the president.”
He said that a fix “will have to come out of the House.”
“So I think it’s entirely reasonable for the new speaker and his team to put spending reduction on the table,” McConnell said. “I wish him well in talking to the president. That’s where a solution lies.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., agreed with McConnell that the onus is on McCarthy to move on the debt limit.
"McConnell made the argument for us. He says the House has to go first," Schumer told a small group of reporters Tuesday afternoon in the Capitol. "We're just taking that one little step further and saying yes, not only that to go first, they have to show us a plan."

Precious metals have been through the ROOF this week. They’re anticipating that the debt ceiling will be lifted - same as it ever was.
Stock Market? Not so much...
Money bills don’t originate in the Senate. Mitch has just realized he has become super irrelevant. The House will bring forward and pass whatever Single Issue bills they want, future in the Senate be damned. If not passed by the Senate, the House will beat them over the head, speaking directly to the people. Whatever administrative issues the House can handle by themselves will be done. Investigations will lead to public results.
McConnell is not in a position to negotiate since he is only the minority leader in the senate.
Oh, ONUS. I scanned the headline too quickly.
McCarthy has a no-win situation on his hands.
I don’t think there is a ‘great’ solution to this.
One way or another, McCarthy will look bad.
McConnell is a befuddled old dufus. It should be the House
who negotiates, so McConnell didn’t have a reason to say
anything. He just couldn’t resist.
I think a default would last only hours before Biden declared a national emergency and resumed payments.
So true and the same can be said for all those senators who voted to make him majority leader knowing all the crap he pulled during the 2022 elections and before.
We all know that Mitch Chow lacks an onus.
Being an honest-to-goodness traitor is far worse than being just a plain old Uniparty hack by a factor of 1,000, as it carries a death sentence when convicted, and a death sentence is what he really deserves.
Being just a Uniparty hack only deserves losing power. Thus, being called a Uniparty hack is the understatement. 🙂
Republicans should constantly remind the young people that they will have to carry the cost of the debt and maybe pay it off.
Why do we have to expand debt?
Just trim until they spend no more than they take in.
Mitch, the original “Cave” man.
BS
In saying that you fail in a number of ways. First of all, the article is from NBC/COMCAST, a domestic enemy that is the propaganda outlet for the progressives. Truth is not in them
Second you illustrate a fundamental misunderstanding of our government in two respects. The house initiates money matters. Sen McConnel is out of power and the Speaker is in.
McConnell rightly steps aside.
I know you live to bitch at Mitch but your venom is unjustified in this instance.
>> McConnell rightly steps aside. <<
That’s the problem. Mitch should be outspoken about spending cuts in support of the House. I have no faith that he’ll support McCarthy and House conservatives block Biden’s wrecking ball.
I say forget about a spending reduction. Simply freeze spending at 2022 levels :)
“..and a death sentence is what he really deserves....”
And on that note, I wholeheartedly agree!!!
Never raise the debt ceiling on your own ever. Make sure if a deal comes through no one will be made whole. If the dims push it out it is money lost for their constituents. And don’t give a d@.. if the debt ceiling is ever raised.
