The rise in “deaths of despair” among middle-aged white Americans may be linked to the decline in religious practice, according to new research.
Such an increase in deaths has also been highlighted by the opioid crisis, but new research argues skyrocketing suicide and deaths from alcohol abuse might be rooted in the loss of religion.
The paper, circulated by the National Bureau of Economic Research, found that the increase of “deaths of despair” among middle-aged white Americans starting in the early 1990s was the aftermath of a declining religiosity in the United States by the same group.

Surveys have shown the children who see their father going to church regularly will be far more likely to do so themselves years later. Less so seeing their mother.
Tossing aside the nuclear family to aid socialism or feminism has long lasting harmful effects such as depression and low self worth.
Wait a minute are they saying individuals who used to be religious but lost their religion are driving the trend? Or are they only saying that suicide is up and religion is down?
Abortion is the leading cause of loss of religion. Nobody could do it unless atheist.

We need Christ in our hearts. And we also need each other. That’s the benefit of worshipping together.
But it’s much more than that. Religion encourages sacrifices for others and a path where we can do good works.
Pride in our faith, setting an example of faith, ok, peer pressure, these acts and behavior inspire others to Christ.
Drugs, alcohol, infidelity, abortion, etc. are the result of emptiness and self hate that faith and God’s grace can overcome.
Reason #1 for the leftist mobsters to continue attacking religion. Go to church, draw closer to God, p*ss of a leftist. Sounds like a good plan.
Amen!!!!
Well said.
Ping.
I would have died many many years ago if I hadn’t surrendered to Jesus. I learned in my 20s that there’s nothing waiting for you at the end of your life if you have no faith.
Answering my own question, it sounds like they are just saying that religion is down and suicide up, not necessarily suicide by individuals who used to be religion and lost it. Headline should probably not be worded as it is.
Loss of religion would almost certainly be a factor...as would loss of employment.
No Sh!t Sherlock!
Tragic, but the suicide numbers for healthy adults is still quite small - about 1 in 10,000.
Suicide by healthy adults almost always falls into three categories...
Drug or alcohol addiction.
Schizophrenia or clinical depression.
Family history of suicide.
Suicide by young people is almost always impulsive and typically follows a very emotional event.
Suicide by elderly people almost always involves the loss of a spouse or a close companion, or an intractable health condition.
Bottom Line - the reason humans have survived for 200,000 years is because most of us have zero interest in dying.
"White males accounted for 69.68% of (American) suicide deaths in 2020."
Wow! That’s a crazy statistic.
Am curious to know the source for those statistics and if they quantify the percentage of heterosexuals vs. homosexuals.
I have some suspicion about that statistic.
I prefer a return to the extended family that we had before the nuclear family (ie before the soulless corporations took over America) but other than that see your point.
I'm looking. This organization seems to get most of their data from the CDC. I suspect that they conflated Hispanic white with non-Hispanic white, but I'm not sure about that, or about hetero/homosexual.
I think that statistic would help explain why so many younger white men have no interest in attempting to copy previous generations’ path in terms of work, families, etc.; they see the damage wrought by globalization, family breakups, etc. and feel the only way to avoid a short lifetime of misery is to instead live as adolesents forever.
