Google Cuts 12,000 Jobs in Company’s Largest-Ever Round of Layoffs

Google has announced that it will be laying off 12,000 workers — roughly 6% of its current workforce — in another round of recent cuts at a major tech company. Google joins Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook parent company Meta in announcing mass layoffs in recent weeks. The companies have cited recent economic decline following post-pandemic boosts that led to increased hiring.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who also heads its parent company Alphabet, informed staff about the cuts in an email on Friday night. The email was later posted on the tech giant’s news blog.

“I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected,” Pichai wrote in the email.

“Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today,” he went on to say.

“I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI,” the email continued. “To fully capture it, we’ll need to make tough choices. So, we’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company.”

According to the Associated Press, the latest cuts account for the company’s largest-ever round of layoffs.

The layoffs add to thousands of jobs lost in recent weeks at additional tech giants, including Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook parent company Meta.

Meta, like Google, laid off thousands of workers this past November in what amounted to the company’s largest single round of layoffs. The company also cited recent economic woes that followed a brief hiring and growth spree in the immediate aftermath of pandemic lockdowns being lifted.

That’s just the dead weight.

Well I know people don't like to hear that but it's mostly true. I've been in management for close to 30 years and have been in a lot of layoff situations due to mergers, declining revenues, and other business factors.

When we select people to be laid off, it is always those we feel we can best live without.

I know people's egos are such that they attribute their layoff to other factors, such as they are too highly compensated or they are too old, for instance. But the fact it, we decided that they were not contributing to their full potential so the pink slips went to them.

If you are a high contributor, dependable, play well in the sandbox and you are not a "problem" employee, you will be among the very last people to be let go. Trust me on this.

The 12,000 Google people losing their jobs are the complainers, the whiners, the shirkers, the type of people who are more concerned about inserting pronouns in their email signatures than doing their damn jobs.

"Learn to code..................Oh, wait.................... "

Nope, so far it has been the 'woke' component, not the 'work' component. A beautiful thing.

Are these 12,000 the Covid fact checkers or the FBI liasons?

Won’t happen.

Google, Amazon, & Microsoft should be banned from this year’s H1B lottery + any visas for employees about to arrives from the last lottery should be revoked.

We don't need government interference in running businesses.

When businesses fire people, they need to start with the worst performers. When businesses do lay-offs, they need to start with the operations that were the biggest money drains or contributing the least to the bottom line.

If the government gets involved in deciding who to fire, we all know they will fire conservatives first regardless of what the law says.

CEO Sundar Pichai is a failure at tech business. Google, Harvard, Gillette, CDC, Target and Facebook had golden brands in the past. Today they are flimsy brands with no loyalty.

Microsoft just laid off 10,000 as well.

They’re replacing them with AI, in many cases.

We don't need government interference in running businesses. When businesses fire people, they need to start with the worst performers.

THE H-1B VISA IS GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE. It interferes in the labor market injecting foreign nationals into the labor pool reducing wages and hurting American worker. It is codified corruption.

“When businesses fire/hire people, they need to start with the worst performers. When businesses do lay-offs, they need to start with the operations that were the biggest money drains or contributing the least to the bottom line.”

That became history on September 24, 1965, with Affirmative Action. Discrimination based on race, color, religion, and national origin by those organizations receiving federal contracts and subcontracts became illegal.

You think these liberal hippies will turn conservative?

No, I don't.

As an investor, my concern is that they run their business according to sound business principles and the reality of the bottom line. Woke companies do neither because they have allowed their employees' Marxist/Woke indoctrination to infect their companies.

People who bring their politics into the office should be fired and escorted out of the building.

I may care about their politics as a concerned citizen, but, when it comes to business, they need to keep their politics out of it.

And how's that working out? Do we need more of that (like H-1B interference) or a lot less?

As an aside, part of the magic of laying off a group of workers is that it is difficult to prove individual discrimination.
