McCarthy loses sixth vote for speaker as House remains deadlocked

WASHINGTON — For a second consecutive day, a band of 20 ultraconservative rebels blocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy from winning the speaker’s gavel, just hours after former President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to back him and "close the deal."

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, six votes were held on the House floor to choose a speaker; each time, the rebels stuck together and voted for someone else, denying McCarthy the 218 votes he needed to win.

With both McCarthy allies and foes deeply dug in, it ensures that chaos will reign in the House for the foreseeable future under the new GOP majority.

During the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots on Wednesday, McCarthy — a California Republican who has served in leadership for the past 14 years — received support from more than 90% of the 222 GOP members. Earlier in the day, he was nominated by Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus who warned his fellow conservatives that their opposition will end up hurting their cause.

"We're on the precipice of such a destructive argument today. I plead with all— all of my Republican colleagues, let cooler, more rational heads prevail. Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House," Davidson said.

But the McCarthy foes showed no signs of backing down. In the three votes Wednesday, they rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds, a Black Florida conservative who won his second term in November.

Firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., nominated her fellow Freedom Caucus colleague, Donalds, saying she was not swayed by Trump — "my favorite president" — calling her to tell her to "knock this off."

"The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'sir, you do not have the votes and it’s time to withdraw,'" Boebert said of Trump to scattered boos.

That should be the agenda for a Convention of States.

Nope, you are the one who has mistaken. Trump endorsed McCarthy for Speaker after the GOP won the house last November, and has been quite public about it since launching another Presidential bid. Here are some articles from DECEMBER 2022, which confirm that fact:

Do you mean the chairs have to approve it and they won’t?

Then please explain to me how an obscure “endorsement” back in mid December of last year “swayed a handful of Rep votes” AFTER the first couple of voting rounds on Tuesday.

Either way you rational makes no sense aside from being inaccurate.

Not being able to rustle up the votes means he’s not a good leader.

I don’t know if he couldn’t win because he is too arrogant or because he isn’t enough of a crook or a thug, but if he wants to be in charge and he can’t manage to swing the votes, what good is he?

It was not an "obscure" endorsement, anymore than Cindy McCain backing Biden for President was an "obscure" endorsement.

Trump PUBLICLY endorsing McCarthy AFTER the GOP narrowly took Congress, AND calling members of Congress to lobby them for McCarthy (clearly stated in the December news articles) made the headlines and was hotly debated on FR at the time. I guess you were AWOL during those threads, feel free to go back and read 'em. It's not like only a few people noticed. Maybe YOU missed it, but the rest of us didn't.

Sorry you didn't notice it at the time, but I have no doubt it swayed a handful of Congressman who backed Biggs for House Republican Leader to switch their allegiances to McCarthy. That probably explains why 33 Republicans opposed McCarthy for House Republican Leader, but only 20 did so when the FIRST vote for Speaker came up.

>> you rational makes no sense aside from being inaccurate. <<

The only one who was proven to be inaccurate is you. You insisted Trump didn't endorse McCarthy for Speaker until "this morning", when in fact he's been backing McCarthy for Speaker since after the Republicans won control of Congress in November.

I find it bizarre why you feel the need to dig your heels in AFTER being PROVEN wrong.

>> “swayed a handful of Rep votes” AFTER the first couple of voting rounds on Tuesday. <<

What the heck are you talking about? The number of Republicans who supported McCarthy during the first ballot for Speaker was 203. The number by the sixth ballot was 201. The numbers who are for/against him during the whole Speaker election hasn't budged much the last few days, aside from 1 or 2 congressman changing their vote to "present"

The numbers were swayed between the vote House Republican Leader months ago, and the vote for Speaker in Jan. Again, that was BECAUSE Trump ENDORSED McCarthy for Speaker IN NOVEMBER. 33 Republicans opposed McCarthy for Republican Leader. ONLY 20 opposed him for Speaker.

Not sure why you've having a hard time understanding this concept.

And I think it is safe to say that a lot more than 20 GOP VOTERS are upset about the latest sellout by the RINOs.

The left plays their totalitarian ‘lockstep’ tune and our guys jump up to dance.

Really, it’s OK to debate and take a few days - we don’t need to throw chairs but we do need to value the freedom to work things out.

Unfortunately, Newt is howling for the rebels to get in line behind McCarthy.

I suppose that is meant to suggest how much he is behind POTUS Trump?

The rebels would not have McCarthy on the ropes, to do more than make promises to a party of 5 people, but to codify it with a full vote, first, by the Republican Conference... if they had caved instantly to POTUS recommendation. (Per Gateway Pundit article— that McCarthy relents.) Rumor?

I suppose if we extrapolate the 20 GOP reps vs. what, 222 GOP total reps, that’s about 10% of the GOP VOTERS

Good, let’s hope it lasts a couple years...

Then, Jeffries can be Speaker, Biden re-elected, and the Supreme Court justices replaced ...

I think FR has been infected with Democrats and RINOs who are intent on destroying the Republican Party so that the Democrats have no viable opposition.

Left wing nuts, right wing nuts, are all nuts.

“Then, Jeffries can be Speaker”

Unfortunately he may as well be. McCarthy works for the globalists just like the Dems do. His “R” means absolutely nothing. With McCarthy the Dem agenda will still control the house anyhow. McCarthy is going to tie the hands of the other republicans.

I know that the constitution requires a speaker of the house. However, I’m starting to be proud of these rebels.

Fwiw, here’s one guys take on this.

Uniparty MELTDOWN: House GOP Holdouts Nominate Byron Donalds, Reject Kevin McCarthy Again

Crenshaw is agreeing with Cori Bush, so that should indicate the uniparty issue here, lol.

In that case he’d get at least 1000 votes.

Some of you will say “but there are only 435 seats”.

Yes, that’s true. But these are mail-in ballots. Lots of things possible.

May you some day wake up and see the true reality in the bigger picture. Those you are loyal to are not loyal to you in return.

If they were we would not be in the mess we are in now. There is no difference between a congress critter with an “R” and a congress critter with a “D”.

And BOTH are throwing the people under the bus for money and power. They both revere the same God of personal greed. And the WEF, the CFR, The Atlantic Council, the UN, and several financial Corporations like BlackRock, Charles Schwab, Kissinger Inc., and others are where BOTH get this money and power.

BOTH parties have sold us out to these global entities. That is the reality in the bigger picture.
