Republicans in chaos as Kevin McCarthy loses SECOND ballot for Speaker: GOP rebels refuse to back leader and throw their weight behind Jim Jordan with party in disarray on first day in the majority
Daily Mail UK ^ | 13:38 EST, 3 January 2023 | UPDATED: 15:25 EST, 3 January 2023 | By ELIZABETH ELKIND, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER

The new House of Representatives gaveled into its first session on Tuesday

Nearly two dozen of Kevin McCarthy's fellow Republicans voted against his bid to be House Speaker in the first and second rounds

Voting is expected to continue until a Speaker candidate wins a majority

Nineteen Republican rebels have derailed House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party into chaos on their first day in the majority.

The group of dissenters are refusing to back McCarthy and instead threw their weight behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan in the second ballot of the process that is leaving the start of Congress in limbo.

It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot. Now McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.

If the 19 Republicans stand firm in their opposition of McCarthy, the GOP will have to find another candidate or the leader will have to find another way to gain their support.

He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair, in an unsuccessful bid to win their backing after heated meetings and negotiations. Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected

Jordan nabbed six GOP votes in the first round, despite previously stating that he did not want the job.

Republicans always screw up.

************

That is the only thing they can be counted on to do consistently.

Its really amazing how such a weak and feckless party continues to exist. Or perhaps its just a reflection of the party’s gullible voters.

It’s depressing. I want to end up with a speaker that doesn’t want the freaking job. How many times do I have to go through that Paul Ryan didn’t want the job and he hated every minute of it so now we’re gonna make a guy do it again. So dang stupid.

The main difference between the two parties is Democrats play to win. Republicans play to lose.

Like in any contest, those with the greatest will to win usually do. Hence the key to Democrat success.

I think the Dems would prefer McCarthy. They could make that happen if enough of them left and went home. I wonder if McCarthy hasn’t brought up to Democrat leaders.

Trump endorsed McCarthy. Don Jr. has been campaigning for him today on twitter.

Interesting observation. On the other hand it may just be that KM is so pathetically weak (he’s a real life Nowhere Man) that even Trump cannot carry him across the finish line.

The GOP is a party of real losers. McCarthy is just the most obvious one at the moment.

Democrats play to win ideologically and get rich. Republicans play to get rich. They don’t care how.

Except for Trump the GOP has shown itself to be a fake political party. It’s a scam.

McCarthy is a tool of Paul Ryan. Amazing that Trump cannot see that.

They can’t do anything until a speaker is voted in? That’s a problem, “how”?

Totally agree. Trump is wasting his time with the GOP IMHO.

I know a lot of people hate the idea of a third party but right now there’s only one party (i.e., the Uniparty) so we need another choice.

Why should we continually reward failure and deception with our votes? I’m sick of doing that.

I donated generously to Trump because, unlike the GOP, he actually stands for something. I knew the GOP would undermine him but Trump deserved my support.

LMAO! That is so true because those are precisely the groups that don’t give a damn about the country or about anyone who is not a member of their particular tribe.

212 votes was not a majority of the 434 votes cast on that ballot. As long as 434 or 435 votes are cast, 218 votes will be needed. But if 2 or more Congress creatures abstain or are absent, fewer votes will suffice.

Let’s just say the next two years of a Republican Majority in the House will be a letdown for conservatives, again.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Of course, because those who are the Republican majority are sycophants of the Democrat Party, and everyone knows that!

But McCarthy will secure 218 with some Democrats votes...............
Or, the Dims could get their own in with 5 Pubbie votes.

Hopefully this episode will bring an end to the Pelosi consolidation of all powers in the Speaker's Office. Dims have proved themselves to be nothing but cowards and traitors under her.
