The new House of Representatives gaveled into its first session on Tuesday
Nearly two dozen of Kevin McCarthy's fellow Republicans voted against his bid to be House Speaker in the first and second rounds
Voting is expected to continue until a Speaker candidate wins a majority
Nineteen Republican rebels have derailed House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party into chaos on their first day in the majority.
The group of dissenters are refusing to back McCarthy and instead threw their weight behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan in the second ballot of the process that is leaving the start of Congress in limbo.
It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot. Now McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.
If the 19 Republicans stand firm in their opposition of McCarthy, the GOP will have to find another candidate or the leader will have to find another way to gain their support.
He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair, in an unsuccessful bid to win their backing after heated meetings and negotiations. Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected
Jordan nabbed six GOP votes in the first round, despite previously stating that he did not want the job.

That wouldn't be in his best interest. I've been wondering if Trump chose to back McCarthy because he hoped that this exact confrontation would take place, hopefully leading to RINO McCarthy to have to make concessions to Conservatives to get the job.
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

He is the only Trump-approved candidate. Getting rid of him, means getting rid of Trump.
“I would vote against McCarthy just because he had the nerve to already move in to the speaker’s office.”
Good point.
A majority of those PRESENT for the vote is required...you left out the most important word.
Of course, if the DEMs wanted to push the issue and get McCarthy in as a dig against conservatives, they'll just have some of their members abstain in order to give McCarthy a majority of those who voted.
If that were true, Hakeem Jeffries would be Speaker now, since he got more votes than McCarthy did on the first vote..........
203 for McCarthy, 212 for Jeffries, and 10 for Biggs
Waiting for the late-night vote drop... Republicans won't even blink an eye when Hakeem suddenly gets 10,000 new votes.
The Dems discipline their people if they do not conform................
“Here’s an idea - why doesn’t Rep. McCarthy just put in writing that he will indeed support the few things the conservative holdouts are wanting? It’s not like anything they are asking for is unreasonable or anti-conservative.”
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
This. While this is a great process to go through for a few days, ultimately the only answer is KM. He has the backing of Trump and MTG. As you said, force him in writing to govern and act in a more conservative manner - committee placements, legislative proposals, etc.
Wall Street has a saying - bulls make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered. The same applies in politics. Anyone looking for everything is going to get slaughtered.
“We have the finest government money can buy.” - Mark Twain.................
Of course. Votes don’t come free...................
you have to give the Democrats credit. Their unity puts the Republicans to shame. No wonder they always win in the end.
Rep. Chip Roy is telling like it is and nominating Jim Jordan.
It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot.

Considering kev caved on the omnicoupus bill

Not like we could get anything good done anyways with kev acting the Lucy with the football.
That man had talent!
KM? Who dat?
A cane was used on the House floor once.
Duh! Okay, Kevin McCarthy is KM. But he does NOT have the votes. Jordan doesn’t want it so that would leave.... Scalise?
NOT NO but HELL NO, after McCarthy saying if he did not get speaker he was leaving congress all together SCREW HIM!!!
