Republicans in chaos as Kevin McCarthy loses SECOND ballot for Speaker: GOP rebels refuse to back leader and throw their weight behind Jim Jordan with party in disarray on first day in the majority
Daily Mail UK ^ | 13:38 EST, 3 January 2023 | UPDATED: 15:25 EST, 3 January 2023 | By ELIZABETH ELKIND, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER

The new House of Representatives gaveled into its first session on Tuesday

Nearly two dozen of Kevin McCarthy's fellow Republicans voted against his bid to be House Speaker in the first and second rounds

Voting is expected to continue until a Speaker candidate wins a majority

Nineteen Republican rebels have derailed House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party into chaos on their first day in the majority.

The group of dissenters are refusing to back McCarthy and instead threw their weight behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan in the second ballot of the process that is leaving the start of Congress in limbo.

It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot. Now McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.

If the 19 Republicans stand firm in their opposition of McCarthy, the GOP will have to find another candidate or the leader will have to find another way to gain their support.

He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair, in an unsuccessful bid to win their backing after heated meetings and negotiations. Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected

Jordan nabbed six GOP votes in the first round, despite previously stating that he did not want the job.

I would vote against McCarthy just because he had the nerve to already move in to the speaker’s office.

So what’s new?

The cheerleaders like Hannity will report all these worthless investigations and such as major GOP wins, when in reality nothing will change.

Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected.

This is why that $1.7 billion omnibus funding bill was passed. It's also why all that bluster from the Freedom Caucus members about the betrayal of the Senate Republicans who supported it was a lot of symbolic nonsense.

They passed that bill in December because everyone knew the House wasn't going to have its act together in January.

As it stands now, the House can fail to elect a Speaker indefinitely ... and nobody would even notice it until the Federal fiscal year ends on September 30th.

“He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair,”

When your in a political fight like this you do NOT go out and dump gas on the fire like the stupid SOB did after the first vote.
You shut to hell up and give them everything they want and work from there.

He wont, because he is a arrogant SOB that thinks he is entitled. Just like his sister Nancy the Lout.

McCarthy opponents have already maxed out their leverage, have got their concessions and they need to take yes for an answer.

He needs to remove his name from the running. There’s plenty of good strong candidates that can do the job 10 times better than this POS weasel. The mediarats are trying their darnest to put a noose around the Republican’s neck by applying the pressure but we’ve got a couple of days so let’s iron it out and get the best speaker that we can get. McCarthy is an absolute disaster, and a no vote! I am sick and tired of always settling for less! The POS needs to remove himself. He’s not going to win he has lost the trust of the base.

Here’s an idea - why doesn’t Rep. McCarthy just put in writing that he will indeed support the few things the conservative holdouts are wanting? It’s not like anything they are asking for is unreasonable or anti-conservative.

Okay, if 218 is needed, can House members abstain from voting?

The events of today already show that McCarthy is not up to the task. He’s had almost two months to wrap this up, and he thought he could bully his way through it. Like it or not, the group against McCarthy have to be accommodated.
