Republicans in chaos as Kevin McCarthy loses SECOND ballot for Speaker: GOP rebels refuse to back leader and throw their weight behind Jim Jordan with party in disarray on first day in the majority

The new House of Representatives gaveled into its first session on Tuesday

Nearly two dozen of Kevin McCarthy's fellow Republicans voted against his bid to be House Speaker in the first and second rounds

Voting is expected to continue until a Speaker candidate wins a majority

Nineteen Republican rebels have derailed House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party into chaos on their first day in the majority.

The group of dissenters are refusing to back McCarthy and instead threw their weight behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan in the second ballot of the process that is leaving the start of Congress in limbo.

It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot. Now McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.

If the 19 Republicans stand firm in their opposition of McCarthy, the GOP will have to find another candidate or the leader will have to find another way to gain their support.

He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair, in an unsuccessful bid to win their backing after heated meetings and negotiations. Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected

Jordan nabbed six GOP votes in the first round, despite previously stating that he did not want the job.

In 1856 Charles Sumner was ‘caned’ while in the Senate.

This is all Kabuki theater.

If McCarthy is seated as Speaker...then the House actually has to, heaven forbid, do the People’s work. The Pubbies might even be required to go after the Demoncrats for some of the putrid things they did.

And that’s just so icky...

Paul Ryan was elected Speaker after making it clear he didn’t really want the job. I think trying to elect someone against their expressed wishes is a dumb idea. I like Jordan a lot, but if he doesn’t want it, take him at his word.

I’d MUCH rather see Jordan as Speaker than McCarthy. But who am I?

I dont know, maybe someone inconsequential like "We, the People"?

I hate the left...they’ve basterdized our language..

When I was younger, “getting hammered” meant doing something fun. Now, it’s forever tied to that loony Pelosi witch.

Going for the fourth ballot and McCarthy still down. However, dark horse John W. Davis is gaining strength along with William Gibbs McAdoo. It’s a deadlocked floor flight and could last for days and days...

Real democracy doesn’t mean everybody has to march in goose step. That’s what democrats do, and they hate debate unless it’s rigged.

Milquetoast McCarthy is complicit in the treachery of Democrats. Get him out of there.

Oh yeah just what the country needs...yet another investigation. It’s 2023...the 2020 ship has sailed whether we like it or not. I know that is not a popular opinion here but it is the reality.

It is up to the states now to insure elections are monitored and fair. At least we can hold our state representatives feet to the fire and make sure they pass legislation that insures a fraud free vote.

I think the Dems would prefer McCarthy. They could make that happen if enough of them left and went home. I wonder if McCarthy hasn’t brought up to Democrat leaders.
