The new House of Representatives gaveled into its first session on Tuesday
Nearly two dozen of Kevin McCarthy's fellow Republicans voted against his bid to be House Speaker in the first and second rounds
Voting is expected to continue until a Speaker candidate wins a majority
Nineteen Republican rebels have derailed House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party into chaos on their first day in the majority.
The group of dissenters are refusing to back McCarthy and instead threw their weight behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan in the second ballot of the process that is leaving the start of Congress in limbo.
It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot. Now McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.
If the 19 Republicans stand firm in their opposition of McCarthy, the GOP will have to find another candidate or the leader will have to find another way to gain their support.
He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair, in an unsuccessful bid to win their backing after heated meetings and negotiations. Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected
Jordan nabbed six GOP votes in the first round, despite previously stating that he did not want the job.

Good for them. The last thing we need is another Paul Ryan. We need fighters, not panty-wearing Assistant Democrats.
Good we need some Chaos going on. Maybe McCarthy will get the message and move on.
When is the next round of Chaos coming? I can’t wait.
You are someone with a good opinion.
.
Maybe the article should read that when it’s not in Chaos, they’ve spent more than any county on the face of the earth and much of it is unaccounted for.
They would have you believe normal order isn’t bankrupting the country and sending cash bundles to their family and future associates.
The GOOBer’s should ask Paul “Home Alone” Pelosi’s wife if she wants the job.
He has not agreed to all their demands yet. Press on.
At least Jordan calls these creeps out of bounds.
IIRC, they can vote ‘Present’...............
But McCarthy will secure 218 with some Democrats votes...............
A congress in disarray is quite comforting. It’s like running a prison. If things are running smoothly and no problems are filling up your day, the inmates are in the middle of some awful hell on earth full scale rioting and shanking.
Chaos? Ok, I guess a few have their panties in a wad, but this is how the process works and its about time the GOP uniparty RINO types get the message that the base is done with their shenanigans.
I would chalk this up as a win. There is a battle for the party and McCarthy has a lot of splinters in his butt. He is getting a lesson in “democracy”.
McConnell is completely on the other side of the fence and he does not give a crap what we think. He is all about himself.
Election to the Speaker post has to be an absolute majority of ALL members of the House. 218 is the magic number.
The good news is, the Democrat Socialists cannot get a majority either.
This might become the unexpected headline news on the MSM broadcasts, allowing them to bash Republicans for chaos, duping the low info voters into thinking poorly of the Republicans.
Something tells me McCarthy gets it on the third vote.
LOL. I see what u did there.
Amen. The GOPe can't get their puppet installed as easy as they wanted. If McCarthy wants the job, he'll have to make some more concessions. It would be interesting to know who he is calling before he agrees to these concessions. Hopefully it won't be business as usual for Repbublicans in the majority.
Fantastic. McCarthy is a back-stabbing squish.
“No man’s life, liberty, or property are safe while the congress is in session.”
~ Mark Twain
“He needs to remove his name from the running.”
Totally agree. McCarthy’s ego is dividing the party. He needs to stand down.
