Philosophers seeking to answer questions around inequality in household labour and the invisibility of women's work in the home have proposed a new theory -- that men and women are trained by society to see different possibilities for action in the same domestic environment.
They say a view called "affordance theory" -- that we experience objects and situations as having actions implicitly attached -- underwrites the age-old gender disparity when it comes to the myriad mundane tasks of daily home maintenance.
For example, women may look at a surface and see an implied action -- 'to be wiped' -- whereas men may just observe a crumb-covered countertop.
The philosophers believe these deep-seated gender divides in domestic perception can be altered through societal interventions such as extended paternal leave, which will encourage men to build up mental associations for household tasks.

Smart guys avoid the drama altogether.
Gosh, after reviewing this thread I am beginning to suspect there are differences between how men think and how women think.
The Husband Store allegory.
I don’t know how to fix the alternator, but I can patch the shingles on the roof, lay and grout tile, back cut and install baseboards, build furniture from scratch, change out door hardware, and paint an entire room in a day (ceiling, trim, and doors included).
Does that count?
Freeper women are not your usual females. We have no problem getting our hands dirty, but still know how to be feminine and appreciate men being men.
On a serious note, I’m the mother of sons and a proud wife to my husband. This war on men has me alternating between fury at the way men are treated and laughing when these obnoxious “queens” hit The Wall and cry on Tik Tok.
Nah.....let’s just let men be men.....if women just stand back guys can handle most anything.
he asks ...”what do you want me to do”....gee honey there’s a dishwasher full of clean dishes and clean clothes to be folded on the dining room table and put away”......
My wife does a lot of outside work, including mowing and even cleaning gutters (we have a ranch house so not too taxing). However there are tasks like hanging a picture that she simply refuses to learn how to do. She's intimidated. Same as when I tried to show her how to drive a stick shift. Not because she lacks innate ability but rather because she is simply unwilling to risk failing. So these things become 'husband' tasks and she'll leave them undone for years if I don't do them (but I would because she's good at nagging, which is her way of doing the task). Perhaps for their next article the author should write about how to "fix" women like her.
Men don't see the guile of a woman, the woman is easily misled, the man blames it on the woman You gave me, and the woman spends all of her life on earth pleasing someone else and for the most part, actually likes it, believes it's her duty and man is never required to look in/at things he just doesn't want to.
No Madame I don’t. I live in southern New Jersey. We have mosquitos, clouds of them sometimes. Annoying things. Can drive one mad.
I worked in NYC in the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s in a labor union.
Demolished many an old building in my time.
Ever see a cockroach the size of a mouse?
I have. Plenty of them. Whacked one with a shovel once .
Hardly phased the filthy thing. Had to hit it several times before it’s guts came out.
Oh yes, we positively swoon over a man who kills a Palmetto bug for us. At least we Southern Ladies do. Those things give us the vapors. Seriously.
That’s weird. The lady next door has plotted the demise of flies at great length. She has different strategies for different situations (and has told me all about it). Flies don’t fare any better over here at my house.
Maybe you look like you enjoy the hunt, and they don’t want to ruin the fun?
Exactly! Men and women are different. Who knew?
This woman agrees.
I do all of the cooking, the laundry, and the cleaning. He pays the bills, keeps our cars running, and fixes stuff. My husband is the best.
You prove my point.
The exception proves the rule.
Thank you. :)
I saw that in my daughter - in- law......it will destroy a marriage and did .
I can change the oil & the filter.
I can change headlight bulbs & adjust them.
I can change a tire—altho strength is waning
I can paint—inside or outside.
I can change spark plugs-—in car/truck/lawn mower
I can use 26” blade chain saw & clean it every night for use next day.
STILL FEMALE NOW 83
Ha!. I worked in NYC in the late ‘70’s and 80’s as a demolition laborer. Saw cockroaches as big as mice. Had to hit them a couple of times with a shovel. I kid you not.
I can do that, too.
