Former President Trump on Sunday said he turned down a deal to release former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, who’s been detained by Moscow since 2018, in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout during his time in the White House.
“I turned down a deal with Russia for a one on one swap of the so-called Merchant of Death for Paul Whelan. I wouldn’t have made the deal for a hundred people in exchange for someone that has killed untold numbers of people with his arms deals,” Trump said on Truth Social.

The responsible thing was to turn down a trade for an arms dealer. That would be irresponsible to turn a man, who has a share of responsibility for the world’s wars.

By not exchanging Whelan for Bout, President Trump has saved many lives. We should be thankful... and keep praying for Whelan and J6 prisoners.

Whelan volunteered to join the Marines. You’ve got to give him some credit for that. Yet he got a Bad Conduct Discharge. You’ve really got to mess up to get a BCD these days. From what I understand, Whelan was a thief.
So, yeah. Most reports just say that Whelan was a Marine. Better to say that he was a Marine with a BCD.
Russian oligarchs are now on their way to buy some of Hunter’s “artwork” as that was part of the deal. They can be in NYC on UN diplomatic passes even if sanctioned.
Trump turned down a deal and rightfully so.
