Joe Biden signs bill axing rail-worker sick days plea before royals meeting

WASHINGTON — President Biden signed legislation Friday forcing railway unions to accept a labor agreement despite worker objections to a lack of paid sick days — hours before hobnobbing with visiting British royals.

Biden regularly calls himself the “most pro-union president” in history but asked Congress to intervene Monday, saying the US economy could not bear a railway shutdown.

The president will meet Friday afternoon in Boston with Prince William, the heir to the UK crown, and his wife Kate Middleton — creating awkward optics after the president also hosted billionaires and Hollywood stars Thursday night for a lux state dinner on the White House lawn.

“The bill I’m about to sign ends a difficult rail dispute and helps our nation avoid what without a doubt would have been an economic catastrophe at a very bad time on the calendar,” Biden said before inking his signature.

“A rail shutdown would have devastated our economy. Without freight rail, many of the US industries will literally shut down,” Biden said. “My economic advisors report that as many as 765,000 Americans … would have been put out of work … within the first two weeks of the strike.”

If the GOP is smart (it isn’t) it could end up being the party supported by unions. The Democrats are now clearly the party of the rich.

I’m sure that is still there and they will get the sick days too. Just wait a bit.

So, the government now orders privately employed railroad workers to work at rates and terms imposed upon them? No longer a free market, no longer respect for worker rights, just give big business what they want?

“The Democrats are now clearly the party of the rich.”

We keep losing because both parties have leadership bought and paid for by the rich.

They say “democracy”, I say “kleptocracy”.

The press keeps harping on the agreement not including sick days but I have yet to read anything the agreement DOES include.

They get 3-4 days sick leave but have to notify 30 days in advance.

There is no doubt that the number elected idiots have reached critical mass now.

The Railway Labor Act was passed almost a hundred years ago.

It's designed to protect the interests of railroad customers, not the railroads themselves.

No longer a free market, no longer respect for worker rights, just give big business what they want?

The union leadership agreed to these terms back in September. The rank-and-file members of SOME unions (4 out of 12) didn't ratify the agreement.

I would contend that there is no such thing as a "free market" when labor unions operating under freely negotiated contracts are allowed to stop work when ANOTHER UNION goes on strike.

What they will do is go back to work, but very slowly - there is nothing that says they have to work at peak efficiency. The effect will be much the same as a strike.

The Govt. assumed jurisdiction over the railroads many moons ago, under the guise of regulating “interstate commerce”. The railroads back then must not have fought against that and bent over for them.
