You don’t get fired if you take sick time either.

I don’t generate revenue when I’m sick, so I may as well be fired. :-(

“ If the GOP is smart (it isn’t) it could end up being the party supported by unions. The Democrats are now clearly the party of the rich.”

I am UAW here in Cincinnati and I can say without a doubt that the rank and file support the Republican Party however, the leadership will always support dims no matter what.

You said, “This idea that a business should pay people even when they contribute ZERO productivity to the company’s operations has no basis in any sound economic principles.”

Are you suggesting that there should be no “earned” Vacation Time and no “earned” Sick Leave as a benefit of employment? In other words you advocate that, If you are not at work, you do not get paid? Do you also advocate that if you are not at work you can be fired?

Therefore I assume you work 356/yr. Good for you.

Warren Buffett owns a railroad. He told his puppet what to do. The railroads have fired thousands over the years and expect those still employed to always be on call and accept being penalized for taking any time off for any reason.

My rule of thumb was to pay employees 20% more than the market rate for their work ... and then allow them to take up to 20% of their time off with no pay.

That's the equivalent of getting more than 10 weeks of paid vacation in a typical year.

I challenge anyone to come up with a better idea for balancing compensation with worker productivity.

The get sick days now the question is just how many they have now vs how many more they want.

Law enforcement and companies’ militia, armed detectives and National Guards have a long history going back to 1850 of “firing into crowds” of strikers. Worker deaths due to strike have pretty much been non existent since the late 1930’s

LEOs and company security historically shot first. National Guard seems to wait to be fired upon. Why would this particular rail strike result in strikers being murdered?

THAT makes sense. You did account for that. Not many companies do hence the benefit fight.

I heard a railroad worker on the radio say their sick days were taken away by the government years ago.

I don’t really give a damn one way or the other on this, but I have a feeling that “facts” are being very selectively talked about. I saw some article saying they don’t get any paid sick days off. Is that because they get some number of days of total time off, and it is all counted together as ‘PTO’, whether it is vacation or no? That’s the way my job started doing it some time ago.
