Five cars rented by President Joe Biden’s Secret Service detail for his Thanksgiving weekend trip to Nantucket mysteriously burst into flames a day after he left, according to reports.
Footage of the burned out rental vehicles in a car park at Nantucket Memorial Airport was obtained by the Nantucket Current.
The local news site reported that the cause of the fire was under investigation. No one was injured in the blaze.
Footage showed firefighters dampening down the smouldering remains of several vehicles including a Chevy Suburban, a Ford Explorer, an Infiniti QX80, a Ford Expedition, and a Jeep Gladiator.
In a statement, the airport said an active fire was spotted on its CCTV system at 5.22am on Tuesday.
“Staff activated the Alert system and responded to the fire in Airport-3, where they were met by responding units from Nantucket Fire Department and Nantucket Police Department.”
The blaze spread to just 40 feet (12m) from the airport’s fuel tanks, the Current reported said.
“Combined fire resources responded and contained the fire,” the airport said.

Not that unusual, especially in parking garages where the cars are parked quite closely. Cars are mostly plastic (petroleum) now rather than metal. Fire spreads fast and hot.
We carry millions in fire insurance in our auto repair shop. I’ve experienced a leaking gas tank turning into a flamethrower by an errant spark.
Destroyed the car, the hoist it was on and two adjacent vehicles. The heat and smoke damaged the shop wiring so we were closed for two months for repairs.

This happened after the President left and was back in DC.
Yeah, it’s a coincidence. Probably poorly maintained vehicles that have been abused for a couple of years. It’s not like they haul in a brigade of new cars every three months.
There ARE car fires in parking lots and garages every day.
Hope they checked the right boxes on the rental agreement paperwork.
Perhaps it was Marjorie’s space lasers.

Wonder how many vehicles were burning when it was first noticed.

The worst thing I ever had happened in My shop back in the day was a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow engine fire.
Worse was the clean up of the fire extinguisher mess.
Fortunately, we didn’t skip or skimp on insurance like a lot of small businesses do and it was tempting in the early, hungry years.
The silver lining is that the fire saved our roof because the heat and smoke killed killed a termite colony in the roof we didn’t know about. Buggers were falling out all over after it was out. We sprayed anyway, but the guy said he was pretty sure there were no survivors. Rest of the building is brick and concrete.
It is odd - it’s a serious situation. And should be treated that way.
