NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday said the “door is open” to admitting Ukraine into the security alliance and that the country would one day be a member.
Stoltenberg reaffirmed the commitment to bringing Ukraine into the western alliance and said Russian President Vladimir Putin would also have to contend with Finland and Sweden soon joining NATO after both countries applied in the wake of Russia’s late February invasion of Ukraine.
“President Putin cannot deny sovereign nations to make their own sovereign decisions that are not a threat to Russia,” Stoltenberg said in comments ahead of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Bucharest, Romania. “I think what he’s afraid of is democracy and freedom, and that’s the main challenge for him.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he would apply for NATO membership in late September with the hope to fast-track the application process amid the ongoing war with Russia.

There are currently five (5) NATO nations on Russia’s border(s): Norway; Estonia; Latvia; Lithuania; Poland. There will soon be another one: Finland. Russia hasn’t done anything about those. So, it’s clear that membership in NATO is NOT a major Russian concern.

I am pulling for Ukraine to defeat the Russian invader. But, I agree with you on this point: Ukraine does not meet the criteria for becoming a NATO member, at least at the present time.

Gator, there are presently five NATO countries on Russia’s border(s); and soon to be six when Finland becomes a member. Yet, there has been no escalation because of that.

Gator, by that logic YOU have no business saying what ANY country should do, other than your own. This is a discussion, and everyone has an opinion. Let that discussion play out.
Is Finland going to be approved? What does Turkey say?
All countries aren’t the same, and have different people ethnically, culturally, and historically. Their relationship with Russia differs.
This is a European problem, and the US and Turkey don’t belong in NATO.
How long has the US provided military defense of Europe, while they funded their Socialism and very little to defense?
Say Russia completely left the Ukraine, do you think “we” would be through?
What is “our” endgame?
Say Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran all fall. Do you think there will be peace and freedom for the individual?
Globalism is a far greater threat to freedom than the countries listed above are to us.
