NPR Presents Laughably Pathetic Thanksgiving Food Substitutes Due to Inflation
Newsbusters ^ | November 24, 2022 | P.J. Gladnick

Remember "funemployment?" That was a concept introduced during the Obama administration during 2009 to make people feel better about rampant unemployment by portraying it as a fun thing.

Well, flash forward to the inflationary era of 2022 during the Biden administration and National Public Radio has come up with something similar. Not the "Whip Inflation Now" (WIN) of the 1970s but more of an upbeat version that makes inflation sounds like a creative challenge or Winflation. And as part of the Winflation challenge, NPR has come up with what they think are creative ideas for whipping inflation during Thanksgiving dinner.

Picture the scene: The Thanksgiving guests are seated around the dinner table and eagerly anticipating the traditional dinner when the host reaches into the oven and pulls out a tray of... bacon. Imagine the depressing letdown of the guests when they realize it is no joke and they won't be eating turkey. Nothing could be destroy the mood more except perhaps if the host also presents his substitute for stuffing... sliced tomatoes.

I can’t believe they didn’t include Beyond Meatloaf (with free mold included).

They don’t have a core foundation that requires a Holy Creator. They supply their own needs so who’s to thank?

I’d rather eat with Charlie Brown.

Meijers had 5# potatoes for 99 cents here in Indiana. At least 2 weeks in a row. We are having chicken and dried bread stuffing because that’s what’s in the freezer.

Even though I had 2 turkeys purchased at $0.69/lb, the group consensus around here was decidedly not in favor of turkey. As a result I am putting the finishing touches on 5-cheese Creole lasagna for 12.

Have you not noticed? These crooks are now referring to
THANKSGIVING as ‘friendsgiving’; stealing the entire meaning
of the day. Christmas (part deux)

My very nice neighbor gets all her news on NPR. She’s a vegan and would be utterly disgusted with the bacon idea.

I have no clue what vegans eat for protein—tofu and tempeh probably. Tofurky? Tempeh has many nutritional benefits and might taste better. I bought some and stared at it in the fridge til it turned moldy and got thrown out.

I live alone, and just had eye surgery, so not going to drive or even take bus up to see my daughter and SIL 80 miles away. Bought a little organic chicken at Trader Joe and invited a very nice neighbor to join me. He did some grocery shopping for me last week when I couldn’t go out. His wife is in care somewhere nearby, muscular dystrophy, too much for him to handle alone, but he goes to see her almost daily.

A small kindness here and there is a lot to be thankful for.

I confess—already had a turkey purchased at $.98/lb. When I saw the 13 lb Kroger turkey for $6.37, bought it too! Cooking the cheap turkey today, with sausage/artichoke stuffing. Perfectly mashed butternut squash, spinach souffle, smashed potatoes, homemade blueberry pie. Giving thanks!

I don’t understand this. Whole turkey is insanely cheap; stores use it as a loss leader, I guess. Beef is $8 - $25/pound here in the DC area, but whole turkey is $1.29, with some places selling the entire bird for $3.

My cat actually prefers dog food. She’s eating some now.

I feed my dogs grain-free food - checked with the vet and he said it was OK for cats to eat this too - I managed to find some cat-specific food that is freeze-dried like my dogs’ food.

Still, she gravitates towards the dogs’ bowls.

Our Eva would eat everything fresh-caught herself. Our Boyd LIVES to hear that can opener in the morning, LOL!
