MSNBC host blames gerrymandering for DeSantis win: 'No way he could gerrymander himself across 50 states'
Fox News ^ | 11/21/2022 | Lindsay Kornick

Vote Latino President María Teresa Kumar argued on Saturday that gerrymandering was a factor in Gov. Ron DeSantis’ re-election, despite his race being a statewide office.

Kumar appeared as a guest host on MSNBC’s "Velshi," where a panel discussed former President Trump’s effect on the Republican Party. The discussion soon focused on DeSantis as a kind of successor to "Trumpism" for his rise in popularity

However, Kumar claimed that his success, even in the state of Florida, is due not to DeSantis’ record as governor, but because he "gerrymandered" the state.

"Is Ron DeSantis Trump 2.0? And a lot of people are asking this question, but one of the things that has been underreported is the fact that Ron DeSantis, yes, he won, but he highly gerrymandered the state of Florida and oftentimes, people say, ‘well, that was, you know, he was a statewide office.’ But gerrymandering has the impact of chilling potential voters for the opposite side of going out and voting. There’s no way he could gerrymander himself across 50 states. What would be his pathway?" Kumar asked.

"Well, he also can't gerrymander himself political charisma or retail politics either," The Lincoln Project’s senior advisor Tara Setmayer joked.

"You said it!" Kumar responded.

Gerrymandering is the process of drawing electoral districts in a way that benefits a political party. Although both political parties have redrawn congressional districts to affect House elections, some races, including gubernatorial elections, are voted on statewide and are unaffected by district lines.

Shortly after DeSantis’ re-election, editors of Florida’s Sun-Sentinel newspaper similarly accused the governor of "racial gerrymandering" to secure his race. ***

How does one gerrymander a governors race when everyone in the state is able to vote directly for the gov?

You can't. But the Dims rely on the stupidity of their constituents, and like to exploit dog-whistle terminology.

HAHA!

Didn’t you know, DeSantis gerrymandered Dade and Broward counties into Puerto Rico?

It’s a statewide vote! There’s no way to gerrymander that.

Correct. But also note that the media doesn't challenge the Dims on these "trivial" facts.

How does gerrymandering factor into how many total votes are cast in a state?

I don’t think this is fake news. This is definitely a strategy the left would employ.

But nice try, I guess.

Gerrymandering affects districts, it doesn’t affect statewide races, this person is an idiot.

I can gerrymander districts in a state to be weighted one way or another, but statewide elections are a cumulation of all votes cast, irregardless of which district they are cast from....

You can’t “gerrymander” yourself a statewide victory unless you created something equivalent to the Electoral College at the state level, which Florida does not have.

If states set up electoral college type of setups, urban overwhelm that affects most states would be much harder to accomplish.

IE 1 elector per county, and that elector is tied to vote for who won their county, irrespective of counties population, or some such... Then GOP would be governor of nearly every state.

Ms Kumar is an idiot.

The constant and continuous anti Trump gaslighting is getting to be annoying. From all the flack Trump is getting from both the GOPe and the left I'd say he is directly over the target.

Why is it called “gerrymandering” when Republicans do it, but called “redistricting” when Dem’s do it?

Yep, he just squeaked by by a million and a half votes of six million cast. Never would have won without Gerrymandering.

the LEFT is promoting DeSantis to prevent Trump from getting the nomination

Wrong.

The Left does not fear Trump. Why would they? He’s cost the GOP the last three elections.

What they fear is Trump stepping aside and DeSantis stepping in.
