Musk lays out Twitter mission, sparks debate on content accuracy

Twitter Inc's new CEO Elon Musk said on Sunday the social media platform's mission was to become the most accurate source of information about the world, sparking debate about how it would achieve that and who determines what is accurate.

A flurry of drastic measures including sacking half the staff and charging users that Musk has taken since he took over Twitter in a $44 billion deal just about a week ago has provided some early clues to how the platform will be reshaped by the world's richest person.

Some advertisers have pulled spending since the deal was announced, with Musk blaming activist groups for pressuring advertisers amid concerns about its content moderation.

"Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world. That’s our mission," Musk said on Sunday.

His tweet instantly triggered tens of thousands replies and provoked lively debates on how the mission will be achieved.

"Accurate to who?," Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey asked.

Musk, who also runs electric vehicle company Tesla and rocket firm SpaceX, said last month Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with "widely diverse viewpoints".

Here’s a great quote in line with what you wrote...”the Only way to make a bad idea seem like a good idea is to silence the good idea that shows just how bad the bad idea really is” L.Star

Sounds to me like the Administration has ordered those who get government monies to quit Twitter. This did not happen in woke boardrooms. It was an order from the administration.

"Accurate to who?," Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey asked.

This question is the original source of the entire twatter problem, the left does not believe in absolute facts.

"My own truth" is now and always has been, pure bullshit.

If we can not agree on certain basic facts, rules of the road, then the question , "Accurate to whom" becomes the standard, and the twatter that Musk bought is the outcome.

The Founding Fathers said that the Constitution of the United States would only work with a religious people, and they were correct.

As the US population becomes more secular, the less that people respect the Constitution.

From my Free Republic experience, it appears that the alternative to censorship is blasted propaganda. If you can’t silence the opposition, you drown them with noise.

The Internet, as a source of information, has already passed its zenith. Long-trusted authorities like encyclopedia have been swept aside, by it. Newspapers have been fishwrap for decades.

It’ll be interesting to see if Musk can come up with anything, though I think that his belief that he should is misplaced.

There is a pronounced echo chamber effect on Free Republic.

I think of it as riding a band wagon or doctrinaire posting

The doctrine is not formulated by Jim Rob but just grows as riding the band wagon becomes a popular way to enhance personal self esteem

I agree.

That said, any time there are censors or moderators, they will have the temptation to abuse their authority and start killing free speech.

It might be that the only solution for Twitter is to permit any and all free speech (including vulgarity and threats of physical violence) and let the police enforce the law.

I have no thoughts on Twitter because I have no relevant experience.

I have however become a great fan of Elon Musk. He is not only brilliant but has a very strong ability to gather super capable people and put them to work. His rocket company people bested Boeing, NASA and even Russia.

I suspect he is attempting a similar disruption at Twitter.

We’ll see.

I really wonder if the big picture here is that Elon is going to have a social network platform AND make a play to be THE NEWS, push aside ALL of the MSM CNN/Fox et al.

It would be a very compelling offer to have a 100% opinion free news source based on facts only. And THEN open it up to conversation and debate.

As it is international, This will Scare the pants off ALL GOVs.

When it comes to politics, most issues are opinion based, and not subject to objective truth. The use of statistics is the most common way for politicians to promote a policy that may or may not be effective in the manner presented. While the numbers could be accurate, the context is speculative. There is simply no way to independently verify most politically based discussions.

That's certainly a risk. But anything less than full-on free speech will get redirected toward the bias of the censors.

What do you suggest?

“...sparking debate about how it would achieve that and who determines what is accurate.”

Well, well, well. Just listen to that.

I thought it was Jack Dorsey, and since there were no debates about his stated aims, he must have been perfect.

But now, since perfection is gone, the credentialing argument crops up.

One of my favorite sagas regarding "accuracy" and "settled science" is ulcers.

In 1981 Barry Marshall began working with Robin Warren, the Royal Perth Hospital pathologist who, two years earlier, discovered the gut could be overrun by hardy, corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. Biopsying ulcer patients and culturing the organisms in the lab, Marshall traced not just ulcers but also stomach cancer to this gut infection. The cure, he realized, was readily available: antibiotics. But mainstream gastroenterologists were dismissive, holding on to the old idea that ulcers were caused by stress.

Unable to make his case in studies with lab mice (because H. pylori affects only primates) and prohibited from experimenting on people, Marshall... ran an experiment on ...himself. He took some H. pylori from the gut of an ailing patient, stirred it into a broth, and drank it....Back in the lab, he biopsied his own gut, culturing H. pylori and proving unequivocally that bacteria were the underlying cause of ulcers.

For their work on H. pylori, Marshall and Warren shared a 2005 Nobel Prize. Today the standard of care for an ulcer is treatment with an antibiotic.

I truly believe that a great amount of the hysteria around Trump, and the attendant wake regarding the truth, accuracy, the pandemic and "antivaxxers," is a leftist dogma that THEY will NOT be the ones who stand idly by as Hitler2 et al are in the world.

For decades after WWII, many people asked themselves "what would *I* have done in Berlin in 1939 to stop Hitler?" Trump comes along, and these nuts whip themselves into a frenzy and make Trump out to be Hitler2.

They fancy themselves as the Resistance, and conclude that the answer to the Berlin 1939 question, is "whatever it takes."

This is why you never get a coherent answer from Leftists about the 2020 fraud...because to them, it was a necessary "whatever it takes" measure to stop Hitler2.

The same is true for the pandemic and ANYONE who questioned the efficacy of the shots - all the slandering and marginalization of "antivaxxers" was a necessary "whatever it takes" measure because... well...the left just KNEW they were right and the people questioning that the shots were the ONLY way to fight the virus were part of Hitler2. However, saying that out loud will get them arrested or institutionalized (or tenure at Harvard).

A few weeks ago, there was a thread covering glee over at DU around an obituary with someone in a MAGA hat. Truly reprehensible DU glee was discussed. To my point, one DU poster wrote

A MAGA hat is no different than a swastika these days.

This is where the majority of the left is regarding all of this. They're Resisting and history will pat them on the head for not being like the citizens of 1939 Berlin.

Except, that they're wrong. Bigly. The fact that they've ingested their rantings as dogma is ghastly.

However, if you want a silver lining, even a few posters at DU saw the attendant illegitimacy AND darkness. As one sane DU person wrote,

Anyone with a glancing familiarity with history knows that dehumanizing a stranger you consider your enemy because of their politics usually doesn't end with just that. It's a very dark path.

People who do not understand statistics often mistakenly confuse them with "facts."

I recently had a family member say to me regarding COVID that "statistics don't lie."

All I could say in response was "you're kidding, right?"
