Key bridge linking Crimea to Russia hit by huge explosion
The Guardian ^ | 8th October 2022 | Peter beaumont

The Kerch bridge from Russia to Crimea, a hated symbol of the Kremlin’s occupation of the southern Ukrainian peninsular, has been hit by a massive explosion on the span that carries railway traffic.

Images from the bridge showed a fiercely burning fire engulfing at least two railway carriages from a train on the bridge, accompanied by a vast column of black smoke.

The explosion, which witnesses said could be heard kilometres away, took place around 6am on Saturday while a train was crossing the bridge, although it was not immediately clear what caused it.

Some images appeared to show a second fire at some distance from the main blaze.

Later images also appeared to show part of road bridge that runs parallel with the train tracks had collapsed.

The bridge is both highly symbolic to Russia and an important logistical supply route for Russian forces in Crimea and in southern Russian-occupied Ukraine.

The Russian news service Tass said a fuel tanker was involved. “According to preliminary data, a fuel tank [railroad] car has been on fire at one of the sections of the Crimean bridge, shipping arches aren’t damaged, said Oleg Kryuchkov, an adviser to the Russian occupation head of the Crimea.

Well, I’m not a Catholic! Just a crusty ol’ Lutheran Missouri Synod with a streak of independence and a smidgen of “good Klingon” mentality. We’re all “indoctrinated” — it’s kind of a matter of degree. But, we (or at least I) have a choice.

If a Japanese pilot was told “fly into that carrier or you will be shot now”, or sent home in ruin and dishonor, yeah, I’d have a problem with that. And I would oppose indoctrination to suicide as a system. But, I hold no rancor toward those Kamikaze pilots. I certainly see no “indoctrination to suicide” beyond normal Western military bravery in any significant part of the Ukies’ military.

Is a US soldier indoctrinated by evil if he sacrifices himself on a battlefield to save his platoon? Say, calling in a strike on himself? Seems to me Christ had something to say about that, too... (Yes, that’s an extreme example, but where does one draw the line?)

Anyway, didn’t really mean to get so far off in the weeds philosophically. Do you have any thoughts regarding my questions about the hit itself?

Russian leadership has not essentially changed in centuries. Even freaking Yeltsin said Russia wanted all of Europe and all of Asia.

Noted. I have a buddy saying a location triggered explosive is possible, but I don’t have someone formerly in the biz of designing weapons targeting systems advising me on this one.

In my younger days, I killed quite a few ducks out of a boat that looked a bit lime that.

It can be argued that the truck exploded adjacent to the fuel tanker . The resulting fire and exploding fuel was much greater damage to the bridge by a rocket.

First degree explosion. It was all premeditated and executed.

With the damage, supplies destined for the Russian troops are cutoff for some unknown duration

Where I draw the line in this century is at deliberate or wanton attacks directed primarily at civilians, which attacks have little or no chance at greatly reducing casualties, and, particularly, where the purpose is terror of a civilian population as opposed to taking out a military target (including logistics.)

Wantonly spraying Israeli civilians with missiles is terrorism. Accurate attacks by Hamas on Israeli army bases would be fair game, in my view.

Stick one of Musks Starlink boxes in that and you have a satellite guided bomb with a long range and a very large warhead.

Revision: Accurate attacks by Hamas on Israeli army bases would be fair game, if not made from heavily populated civilian areas, in my view.

They haven’t been communist for over 30 years.

Sure. That’s why Lenin’s corpse is still in the Red Square to be worshipped, thousands of Lenin statues are in public places around Russia, Russian troops in Ukraine fly Soviet flags...
