Key bridge linking Crimea to Russia hit by huge explosion
The Guardian ^ | 8th October 2022 | Peter beaumont

The Kerch bridge from Russia to Crimea, a hated symbol of the Kremlin’s occupation of the southern Ukrainian peninsular, has been hit by a massive explosion on the span that carries railway traffic.

Images from the bridge showed a fiercely burning fire engulfing at least two railway carriages from a train on the bridge, accompanied by a vast column of black smoke.

The explosion, which witnesses said could be heard kilometres away, took place around 6am on Saturday while a train was crossing the bridge, although it was not immediately clear what caused it.

Some images appeared to show a second fire at some distance from the main blaze.

Later images also appeared to show part of road bridge that runs parallel with the train tracks had collapsed.

The bridge is both highly symbolic to Russia and an important logistical supply route for Russian forces in Crimea and in southern Russian-occupied Ukraine.

The Russian news service Tass said a fuel tanker was involved. “According to preliminary data, a fuel tank [railroad] car has been on fire at one of the sections of the Crimean bridge, shipping arches aren’t damaged, said Oleg Kryuchkov, an adviser to the Russian occupation head of the Crimea.

Yes, I put this up about ten times, but worth it.

Some history/details on bridge removal:

Can Ukraine destroy the Kerch (Crimea) Bridge?
https://youtu.be/kBECiXavaGA

MY guess... several teams in the water and a slow barge passing by with unusual chambers in the hull for pick up and delivery. Watching the video of the TRUCK allegedly exploding... the flame front appears to rise from underneath.
Also, untamped HE even a downward-facing shape charge would NOT do great damage to the piers.

This is NOT like in the movies. Massive amounts of high explosives are required. Underwater work is slow. Underwater communication is difficult; more so in the dark.

I propose a toast to the very special teams... Slava Ukraini !!!

Blast footage from both your 1st, and 5th Twitter vids, reveals the blast origin from beneath the spans, and probable origination from a significant sized boat, as there was also a bow visible.

From the 2nd Twitter link, it becomes clear the probable water born detonation carefully targeted the last of the lowest portions of span, before the spans and pylons begin to rise. By targeting the lowest deck spans, the blast had the most upward force exerted against the deck span.

As well, by dropping the last low span before the bridge deck rise, it is possible there may be a downward lateral gravitational force, which could shift from the adjacent rising spans, against the first pair of rising pylons.

Basic engineering was involved here.

When I read these Ukraine-Russia War threads, many comments seem to believe that Ukraine is a sovereign nation with a long history of independence.

As far as I know, except for the aberration of 1990-2020, Ukraine has always been part of some empire, going back at least 3,000 years.

The Mongols, the Tartars, the Ottomans, the Poles, Austro-Hungary, Tsarist Russia, and the Soviet Union, have all controlled Ukraine at various times.

Right or wrong, Putin thinks of Ukraine as part of Russia.

The USA had a similar violent conversation from 1861-1865.

Your information is incomplete.

Ukraine was a briefly independent state after world war one.

It was also a nominally independent polity in the 1400s to 1600s under the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth and Ottoman borderlands.

Also neither Muscowy nor Ukraine have a history dating back 3000 years.

Heck, 3000 years ago the Balts and Slavs were one people with the Nordic.

This is not similar to the Confederate states.

The best analogy would be austria and Germany.

“Russia” is basically Muscowy and Muscowy conquered territories.

Ukraine is a cousin state but with the PLC as a father, while Moscow’s father is the Mkngol khaganate
